Africa-Press – Senegal. <\/strong><\/span>The first edition of a forum on the ro\u0302nier at the service of crafts, opened on Saturday, for two days, in the village of Ndiobe\u0300ne, in the commune of Fande\u0300ne, with the aim of highlighting an improved type of furniture made from ro\u0302nier wood, the fruit of the innovation of the craftsman Aliou Thiaw.<\/p>\n

Focused on the theme \u201cthe ro\u0302nier at the service of crafts\u201d, this forum is a forum to promote artistic crafts made from ro\u0302nier, a heritage of the Serer community from Fande\u0300ne to Pire, passing through Ndiakhate\u0301. This type of wood is also worked in the South and in other parts of the country.<\/p>\n

Aliou Thiaw, l\u2019initiateur de cet e\u0301ve\u0300nement, pre\u0301cise que l\u2019objectif est d\u2019e\u0301lever le ro\u0302nier a\u0300 un plus haut niveau, et donner de la visibilite\u0301 aux petits artisans qui s\u2019y activent.<\/p>\n

The meeting recorded the presence of representatives of the chamber of commerce and the chamber of trades, the town hall of Fande\u0300ne, but also relatives and friends of the initiator, as well as other craftsmen.<\/p>\n

The chief of staff of the Minister of Handicrafts, Ousmane Diop, who officially opened the meeting, praised the preservation work accomplished by the Serer None community.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ro\u0302nier is the nourishing sap of crafts\u201d in Fande\u0300ne, Lalane, Ndiobe\u0300ne, etc., he said, assuring the initiator of this forum of the support of the guardianship which, according to him, has already supported the organization of this meeting.<\/p>\n

An exhibition-sale is organized on the sidelines of the forum, which is sponsored by Jose\u0301phine Ndione, president of the NGO Group for Research and Support for Women\u2019s Initiatives (GREF), which has long worked to promote the ro\u0302nier.<\/p>\n

His creation based on ro\u0302nier associated with wrought iron, glass, raffia and rattan, breaks with the traditional method of assembling benches and lounges in ro\u0302nier, assembled with nails.<\/p>\n

Thanks to a new technique which is based on the weaving of ro\u0302nier leaves on an iron frame, he manufactures garden furniture, in particular chairs, armchairs, dining tables, lounges, swings, cradles. The tables are covered with glass and the armchairs with cushions.<\/p>\n

Employing fifteen young people full time in his workshop, Thiaw sells his garden furniture mainly to hoteliers, but also to individuals looking for original and quality furniture. He says he is ready to share his know-how through training, in conjunction with the chamber of trades.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He would like the public authorities to support this type of craftsmanship through the construction of a showroom which will serve as a showcase for quality ro\u0302nier creations. This will raise the quality of the craftsmen\u2019s work to the top.<\/p>\n

For the godmother, \u201cthe ro\u0302nier financed the studies of many executives in the area\u201d, including the mayor of Fande\u0300ne, the minister Augustin Tine.<\/p>\n

Faced with the multiple threats to the ro\u0302nier\u2019s economy, his NGO, in conjunction with many \u201cson du ro\u0302nier\u201d, has initiated a reflection to safeguard this source of income for thousands of people. These dangers are linked to land pressure which sees many ro\u0302niers cut down to make way for plots for residential use, the drilling of boreholes which dry up the water table.<\/p>\n

The initiator of the forum estimates at \u201cfifteen million CFA francs\u201d the revenue generated per day, by the ro\u0302nier, on the Tivaouane-Thie\u0300s axis.<\/p>\n
