Africa-Press – Senegal. <\/strong><\/span>The African Union Commission and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have launched an initiative called \u201cAfrican Support Facility for Inclusive Transitions (AFSIT)\u201d whose objective is to contribute to the elaboration of a roadmap leading in the long term to the restoration of democracy and stability in the countries in the grip of a reversal of the constitutional order, learned the APS from an official source.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00bbAFSIT’s main objective is to contribute to the development of credible, inclusive and legitimate roadmaps, mechanisms and transition bodies, ultimately leading to the restoration of constitutional order, democracy and stability in the countries concerned\u201d, indicates in particular the launch press release.<\/p>\n

The document consulted at APS recalls that in May 2023, the Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) [had] \u201creiterated their position of zero tolerance towards unconstitutional changes of government and called for collective action aimed at creating a robust mechanism for strengthening democracy and collective security on the continent\u201d.<\/p>\n

In remarks reported by the communiqu\u00e9, the AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Bankole Adeoye, insisted that AFSIT was \u201ca practical and concrete mechanism which aims to strengthen the capacities of all the actors who act in favor of democratic governance. It is an instrument that will be used to train those who will be the guardians of democracy\u201d.<\/p>\n

In its objective to ensure inclusive transitions, \u201cAFSIT will complement existing instruments of the AU, Regional Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms (RECs\/RMs), United Nations instruments, as well as partner initiatives [and] will proactively anticipate, respond to and address complex political crises within AU Member States,\u201d the same source learned.<\/p>\n

AFSIT was launched on the sidelines of the 5th Biannual Coordination Meeting of the African Union, held on Saturday in Nairobi, Kenya.<\/p>\n

Representatives of AU Member States, members of the Peace and Security Council, representatives of the UN, AU, RECs\/RMs, and respective bilateral and multilateral stakeholders, participated in the launch event.<\/p>\n
