Africa-Press – Senegal. <\/strong><\/span>The Magal, a religious gathering which attracts up to five million faithful each year, should be the main catalyst for the industrialization of Touba (center), argues academic Souleymane Astou Diagne.<\/p>\n

Docteur en sciences e\u0301conomiques et statisticien, il avait dirige\u0301, en 2017, une e\u0301tude de l\u2019universite\u0301 de Bambey sur l\u2019impact e\u0301conomique du Magal de Touba, estime\u0301 alors a\u0300 250 milliards de francs CFA.<\/p>\n

Il souligne que c\u2019est sur la base de cette me\u0301thodologie que les auteurs de cette e\u0301tude ont fait des estimations pour arriver a\u0300 un montant approximatif de 250 milliards de FCFA. Selon lui, \u00ab il faut reconnai\u0302tre qu\u2019il est sous-e\u0301value\u0301, parce qu\u2019il y a des e\u0301le\u0301ments qui n\u2019ont pas e\u0301te\u0301 pris en compte \u00bb.<\/p>\n

L\u2019e\u0301conomiste pense que Touba a les moyens d\u2019enclencher et de re\u0301ussir son industrialisation. \u00ab On l\u2019a me\u0302me souligne\u0301 dans les recommandations par rapport a\u0300 l\u2019ensemble des fonctions lie\u0301es a\u0300 la dynamique du Magal \u00bb, fait-il savoir. L\u2019objectif est d\u2019inverser la tendance d\u2019importation et de la substituer a\u0300 une production locale, selon lui.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Si on arrivait a\u0300 inverser au moins de 50% toutes les dynamiques d\u2019importation de produits industriels, alimentaires et autres, je pense que c\u0327a cre\u0301erait des centaines de milliers d\u2019emplois pour les jeunes dans la re\u0301gion de Diourbel, y compris la transformation des peaux des be\u0302tes \u00bb, analyse-t-il.<\/p>\n

Dans cette e\u0301tude, le professeur Diagne et ses pairs estiment e\u0301galement que \u00ab le Magal doit e\u0302tre le principal catalyseur de l\u2019industrialisation de Touba a\u0300 condition que tout ceci soit encadre\u0301, compris et mis en \u0153uvre avec l\u2019appui de l\u2019Etat central, la mairie, le khalifat et des hommes d\u2019affaires qui ont notamment le capital \u00bb.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we had brought in-house all the materials that support these activities such as painting, carpentry, plumbing, metal scrap, sewing, or others, that would create added value in the region,\u201d indicates the teacher at the University of Bambey.<\/p>\n

\u00bbBut we have not yet taken [this step]. And unfortunately, it is a leak in the economy because this money ends up in the pockets of other economic agents who are outside our territory,\u201d says Souleymane Astou Diagne.<\/p>\n

According to him, reversing the current trend would make it possible to create more added value and industrialize the city, including agri-food products.<\/p>\n

Today, notes Mr. Diagne, \u201cmost of these products come from abroad. Because during Magal, there is a peak in imports of milk, sugar, oil, basic necessities like gas, onions, etc. \u00ab\u00a0.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are also peaks at Blaise Diagne airport. The Air Senegal company must therefore capture these thousands of people who are leaving abroad to reach Senegal and go to Touba for Magal. We also need to endogenize the transport chain connected to that of food and logistics,\u201d he suggests.<\/p>\n

Fund transfers during Magal are unimaginably dense. At the time, we exceeded the milestone of 700 thousand transactions per day, causing transits of more than 60 billion FCFA. It was estimated that there were 16% of pilgrims who said they had received a transfer from abroad with an average of 140 thousand FCFA.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mouride is known to be a worker. And these emigrants must structure their capital. They must in particular invest in labor-intensive and capital-intensive sectors to allow consumption dynamics at the local level to find responses in their activities,\u201d recommends the academic.<\/p>\n
