Selon une re\u0301cente e\u0301tude, ces pe\u0301riodes de glaciation ne sont pas ale\u0301atoires: en plus de processus climatiques endoge\u0300nes, la tempe\u0301rature de la Terre de\u0301pend e\u0301galement des proprie\u0301te\u0301s de son orbite, et plus pre\u0301cise\u0301ment des variations de son axe de rotation et de sa distance au Soleil. En e\u0301tablissant un lien clair entre les variations de l\u2019orbite terrestre et ses pe\u0301riodes de glaciation, les chercheurs estiment que la prochaine pe\u0301riode glaciaire de\u0301butera dans environ 11 000 ans&#8230; si les gaz a\u0300 effet de serre d\u2019origine humaine n\u2019augmentent pas.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;orbite de la Terre est re\u0301gie par plusieurs cycles, connus sous le nom de cycles de Milankovitch qui influencent la quantite\u0301 et la re\u0301partition de l&rsquo;e\u0301nergie solaire rec\u0327ue par notre Plane\u0300te. Ces cycles font varier trois parame\u0300tres particulie\u0300rement importants:<\/p>\n<p>l&rsquo;excentricite\u0301 de\u0301crit la forme de l&rsquo;orbite terrestre et varie entre une forme quasi circulaire et le\u0301ge\u0300rement elliptique sur une pe\u0301riode d&rsquo;environ 100 000 ans. La distance de la Terre au Soleil varie donc d&rsquo;un minimum (pe\u0301rihe\u0301lie) a\u0300 un maximum (aphe\u0301lie).<\/p>\n<p>l&rsquo;obliquite\u0301 correspond a\u0300 l&rsquo;inclinaison de l&rsquo;axe de rotation de la Terre, qui oscille entre 22,1\u00b0 et 24,5\u00b0 sur une pe\u0301riode de 41 000 ans. Plus l&rsquo;inclinaison est forte, plus les contrastes saisonniers sont marque\u0301s.<\/p>\n<p>enfin, la pre\u0301cession correspond a\u0300 un mouvement de toupie de l&rsquo;axe terrestre, qui modifie le moment ou\u0300 chaque saison se produit par rapport a\u0300 la position de la Terre sur son orbite. Ce cycle dure environ 21 000 ans.<\/p>\n<p>Le ro\u0302le de la pre\u0301cession et de l\u2019obliquite\u0301 dans les cycles glaciaires<\/p>\n<p>Pour mieux comprendre les cycles glaciaires des dernie\u0300res centaines de milliers d&rsquo;anne\u0301es, les chercheurs ont analyse\u0301 des carottes de glace et des se\u0301diments marins, permettant de reconstituer les variations pale\u0301oclimatiques. Les carottes de glace, extraites des calottes polaires, renferment des bulles d&rsquo;air anciennes qui permettent d&rsquo;analyser la composition atmosphe\u0301rique et les tempe\u0301ratures passe\u0301es.<\/p>\n<p>Les se\u0301diments marins e\u0301tudie\u0301s contiennent des micro-organismes fossilise\u0301s dont les isotopes re\u0301ve\u0300lent des informations pre\u0301cieuses sur l&rsquo;e\u0301volution des tempe\u0301ratures oce\u0301aniques et la formation des glaces continentales. Gra\u0302ce a\u0300 des techniques de datation isotopique et a\u0300 des mode\u0300les climatiques, ils ont pu identifier les corre\u0301lations entre les parame\u0300tres orbitaux et les pe\u0301riodes de glaciation ou de de\u0301glaciation.<\/p>\n<p>Les chercheurs ont ainsi analyse\u0301 les liens entre les cycles de l&rsquo;orbite terrestre et les grandes transitions climatiques du passe\u0301, et ont mis en e\u0301vidence le ro\u0302le de la pre\u0301cession dans le de\u0301clenchement des de\u0301glaciations. Lorsque la pre\u0301cession ame\u0300ne un maximum d&rsquo;ensoleillement estival dans l&rsquo;he\u0301misphe\u0300re Nord, la fonte des glaces s&rsquo;acce\u0301le\u0300re et amorce une transition vers une pe\u0301riode interglaciaire.<\/p>\n<p>Mais ce n&rsquo;est pas le seul facteur en jeu: l&rsquo;obliquite\u0301 semble quant a\u0300 elle influencer la quantite\u0301 totale d&rsquo;e\u0301nergie solaire rec\u0327ue aux hautes latitudes. Lorsque l&rsquo;obliquite\u0301 est e\u0301leve\u0301e, les e\u0301te\u0301s sont plus chauds, facilitant la fonte des glaciers. Les chercheurs ont ainsi observe\u0301 que les de\u0301glaciations surviennent principalement lorsque la pre\u0301cession et l&rsquo;obliquite\u0301 agissent ensemble: la pre\u0301cession de\u0301clenche le processus, mais l&rsquo;obliquite\u0301 joue un ro\u0302le de\u0301terminant dans l&rsquo;amplification du re\u0301chauffement.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019excentricite\u0301 et le rythme des grandes glaciations<\/p>\n<p>Un myste\u0300re pourtant subsiste: les cycles glaciaires semblent majoritairement suivre un cycle d&rsquo;environ 100 000 ans, alors que l&rsquo;influence directe de l&rsquo;excentricite\u0301 sur l&rsquo;ensoleillement est relativement faible. Les chercheurs ont ainsi montre\u0301 que l&rsquo;excentricite\u0301 agit indirectement sur les cycles glaciaires en modulant l&rsquo;amplitude des variations dues a\u0300 la pre\u0301cession. Lorsque l&rsquo;excentricite\u0301 est faible, les pe\u0301riodes glaciaires peuvent durer plus longtemps, car les variations saisonnie\u0300res d&rsquo;ensoleillement sont moins marque\u0301es. En revanche, apre\u0300s une pe\u0301riode prolonge\u0301e de faible excentricite\u0301, une le\u0301ge\u0300re augmentation suffit a\u0300 favoriser une de\u0301glaciation majeure.<\/p>\n<p>Ainsi, les cycles glaciaires semblent e\u0302tre gouverne\u0301s par une combinaison de ces trois facteurs: la pre\u0301cession de\u0301clenche les changements climatiques, l&rsquo;obliquite\u0301 renforce leur intensite\u0301 et l&rsquo;excentricite\u0301 influence leur dure\u0301e.
