A\u0302ge\u0301e de seulement 6,4 millions d\u2019anne\u0301es, elle est tout juste forme\u0301e. La plane\u0300te en question n\u2019est en re\u0301alite\u0301 qu\u2019un point brillant capture\u0301 par la came\u0301ra MIRI du JWST. Elle gravite sur un anneau de poussie\u0300res particulie\u0300rement fin s\u2019e\u0301tirant a\u0300 52 unite\u0301s astronomiques du centre, ce qui, dans notre syste\u0300me solaire, se situerait un peu plus loin que l\u2019orbite de Pluton.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab La source se trouve a\u0300 un endroit bien pre\u0301cis de l\u2019anneau qui ressemble a\u0300 un trou, souligne pour Sciences et Avenir Anne-Marie Lagrange, astrophysicienne au CNRS et premie\u0300re auteure de l\u2019e\u0301tude publie\u0301e dans la revue Nature le 25 juin 2025. Ce trou s\u2019explique par une moindre quantite\u0301 de poussie\u0300res a\u0300 cet endroit-la\u0300. C\u2019est exactement ce qu\u2019on attend d\u2019une plane\u0300te qui partage son orbite avec des poussie\u0300res pie\u0301ge\u0301es par un phe\u0301nome\u0300ne de re\u0301sonance orbitale (c\u2019est l\u2019anneau fin, ndlr), tout en nettoyant la zone imme\u0301diate autour d\u2019elle. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p><b>Une plane\u0300te dont la masse repre\u0301sente 30% de celle de Jupiter<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Assimiler ce petit point brillant a\u0300 une plane\u0300te n\u2019a toutefois rien d\u2019une e\u0301vidence. Il faut de\u0301ja\u0300 s\u2019assurer qu\u2019il appartient au syste\u0300me TWA 7, et qu\u2019il ne s\u2019agit pas, par exemple, d\u2019une e\u0301toile en arrie\u0300re-plan ou en avant-plan, ou une galaxie lointaine? Pour affiner leur diagnostic, l\u2019e\u0301quipe de scientifiques a ve\u0301rifie\u0301 si cette source e\u0301tait visible a\u0300 d\u2019autres longueurs d\u2019onde que celles auxquelles MIRI est sensible, l\u2019infrarouge moyen. Re\u0301sultat: aucune trace dans les images du VLT\/SPHERE, sensibles au proche infrarouge, ni dans celles du radiote\u0301lescope ALMA, qui capte les ondes millime\u0301triques.<\/p>\n<p>Or, si l\u2019objet avait e\u0301te\u0301 une e\u0301toile par exemple, on aurait du\u0302 la voir aussi dans ces autres domaines. \u00ab Et la probabilite\u0301 qu\u2019il s\u2019agisse d\u2019une galaxie de fond est tre\u0300s faible, de l\u2019ordre de 0,3 %, conclut Anne-Marie Lagrange. Et encore, ce chiffre ne tient pas compte du fait que la source tombe pile dans un trou de l\u2019anneau. Ce serait une sacre\u0301e coi\u0308ncidence. \u00bb Ce petit point chaud n\u2019est donc visible que dans l\u2019infrarouge moyen, et c\u2019est justement ce rayonnement thermique, capte\u0301 a\u0300 11,3 microns, qui a permis aux chercheurs d\u2019estimer la nature de l\u2019objet.<\/p>\n<p>En comparant sa brillance a\u0300 ce que pre\u0301disent des mode\u0300les de plane\u0300tes jeunes, encore chaudes, les chercheurs ont pu en de\u0301duire sa masse. \u00ab On a utilise\u0301 des mode\u0300les qui simulent l\u2019e\u0301volution thermique des plane\u0300tes, en tenant compte de leur atmosphe\u0300re, de leur composition et de leur a\u0302ge, explique Anne-Marie Lagrange. En ajustant ces mode\u0300les a\u0300 la luminosite\u0301 que l\u2019on observe, et en respectant les limites fixe\u0301es par les autres instruments qui n\u2019ont rien vu, on tombe sur une plane\u0300te d\u2019environ 0,3 fois la masse de Jupiter. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p><b>TWA 7b inaugure une nouvelle classe d\u2019exoplane\u0300tes<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Une ge\u0301ante gazeuse donc, mais nettement plus le\u0301ge\u0300re que Jupiter, pluto\u0302t voisine de Saturne. Au-dela\u0300 de sa jeunesse et de sa masse mode\u0301re\u0301e, c\u2019est aussi sa position qui est inte\u0301ressante: TWA 7b se trouve a\u0300 une cinquantaine d\u2019unite\u0301s astronomiques de son e\u0301toile \u2014 une distance comparable a\u0300 celle de Pluton autour du Soleil. Or, a\u0300 une telle distance, les plane\u0300tes sont extre\u0302mement difficiles a\u0300 de\u0301tecter. Trop froides pour briller, trop lointaines pour influer fortement sur leur e\u0301toile, ce qui permettrait une de\u0301tection indirecte.<\/p>\n<p>Jusqu\u2019ici, seules des ge\u0301antes bien plus massives avaient pu e\u0302tre image\u0301es. \u00ab Elle est dix fois moins massive que toutes les plane\u0300tes qu\u2019on avait pu voir directement jusque-la\u0300 \u00bb, souligne Anne-Marie Lagrange. TWA 7b vient ainsi combler un vide dans le catalogue des exoplane\u0300tes connues, en ouvrant l\u2019acce\u0300s a\u0300 une nouvelle population d\u2019objets le\u0301gers, relativement froids et e\u0301loigne\u0301s de leur e\u0301toile.<\/p>\n<p><b>La preuve que les plane\u0300tes naissent en creusant leur sillon<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Pour en savoir plus sur ce monde naissant, il faudra pouvoir l\u2019observer de nouveau. L\u2019e\u0301quipe d\u2019Anne-Marie Lagrange a de\u0301ja\u0300 demande\u0301 du temps supple\u0301mentaire sur le te\u0301lescope James Webb. \u00ab On espe\u0300re obtenir de nouvelles observations pour affiner sa tempe\u0301rature (estime\u0301e pour l\u2019instant entre 30 et 60\u00b0C, ndlr), sa composition, sonder son atmosphe\u0300re, connai\u0302tre sa composition chimique, et pourquoi pas de\u0301tecter un disque de matie\u0300re autour de la plane\u0300te elle-me\u0302me \u00bb, explique la chercheuse.<\/p>\n<p>En effet, rien ne dit que TWA 7b ait totalement acheve\u0301 sa croissance et la pre\u0301sence d\u2019un tel disque montrerait qu\u2019elle continue encore d\u2019accre\u0301ter. Me\u0302me si les mode\u0300les actuels sugge\u0300rent que les plane\u0300tes ge\u0301antes se forment tre\u0300s rapidement. Jupiter, par exemple, aurait atteint sa taille actuelle en moins de 3 millions d\u2019anne\u0301es. Au-dela\u0300 de cette plane\u0300te en particulier, c\u2019est toute une hypothe\u0300se qui gagne en cre\u0301dibilite\u0301. Depuis des anne\u0301es, les astronomes observent des \u00ab gaps \u00bb, ces sillons myste\u0301rieux dans les disques de poussie\u0300res entourant les jeunes e\u0301toiles. On soupc\u0327onnait qu\u2019ils trahissaient la pre\u0301sence de plane\u0300tes, mais aucune n\u2019avait encore e\u0301te\u0301 formellement de\u0301tecte\u0301e a\u0300 l\u2019inte\u0301rieur de l\u2019un d\u2019eux. C\u2019est de\u0301sormais chose faite. \u00ab C\u2019est une confirmation majeure, confie Anne-Marie Lagrange.
