Mais depuis une vingtaine d\u2019anne\u0301es, les astronomes ont de\u0301couvert une nouvelle classe d\u2019objets: des plane\u0300tes errantes, flottant dans l\u2019espace, affranchies de toute contrainte gravitationnelle. Des e\u0301tudes ont montre\u0301 que certaines d\u2019entre elles e\u0301taient en re\u0301alite\u0301 des naines brunes, des e\u0301toiles insuffisamment massives pour se mettre a\u0300 briller. Mais les autres ont bel et bien des caracte\u0301ristiques plane\u0301taires et leur origine reste encore bien myste\u0301rieuse. De me\u0302me que leur nombre car une vaste population a e\u0301te\u0301 de\u0301couverte au de\u0301but des anne\u0301es 2010 et ces astres pourraient e\u0302tre bien plus nombreux.<\/p>\n<p><b>Une microlentille, deux points de vue<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Les plane\u0300tes errantes sont principalement de\u0301tecte\u0301es par microlentille gravitationnelle, un effet pre\u0301dit par Albert Einstein dans lequel la gravite\u0301 d\u2019un objet invisible amplifie brie\u0300vement la lumie\u0300re d\u2019une e\u0301toile situe\u0301e a\u0300 l\u2019arrie\u0300re-plan. La dure\u0301e de ce phe\u0301nome\u0300ne renseigne sur la masse de l\u2019objet, mais seulement de manie\u0300re ambigue\u0308, car elle de\u0301pend aussi de sa distance. L\u2019e\u0301ve\u0301nement observe\u0301 au printemps 2024 a e\u0301te\u0301 suivi a\u0300 la fois par des te\u0301lescopes terrestres (les re\u0301seaux KMTNet et OGLE) et par le satellite Gaia, situe\u0301 a\u0300 1,5 million de kilome\u0300tres de la Terre. Ce de\u0301calage a permis de mesurer une parallaxe de microlentille, autrement dit une le\u0301ge\u0300re diffe\u0301rence dans le moment et la forme du signal lumineux selon le point d\u2019observation. Cette information a permis de calculer la masse de l\u2019objet responsable de l\u2019e\u0301ve\u0301nement.<\/p>\n<p>D\u2019apre\u0300s les re\u0301sultats publie\u0301s dans la revue Science, la plane\u0300te aurait environ 0,22 fois la masse de Jupiter, soit peu ou prou celle de Saturne. La plane\u0300te se situe a\u0300 un peu plus de 3 kiloparsecs (10.000 anne\u0301es-lumie\u0300re), dans le bulbe central de la Voie lacte\u0301e. C\u2019est la premie\u0300re fois qu\u2019une plane\u0300te errante voit sa masse de\u0301termine\u0301e de fac\u0327on directe, sans recourir a\u0300 des statistiques.<\/p>\n<p><b>Une plane\u0300te ne\u0301e autour d\u2019une e\u0301toile puis expulse\u0301e<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Cette masse est un indice cle\u0301 sur l\u2019origine de l\u2019objet. Les auteurs estiment qu\u2019un corps de ce type ne peut pas s\u2019e\u0302tre forme\u0301 comme une petite e\u0301toile ou une naine brune, par effondrement direct d\u2019un nuage de gaz. Il correspond davantage a\u0300 une plane\u0300te forme\u0301e dans un disque protoplane\u0301taire, avant d\u2019e\u0302tre violemment e\u0301jecte\u0301e de son syste\u0300me. Des interactions gravitationnelles avec d\u2019autres plane\u0300tes ge\u0301antes ou une e\u0301toile compagne peuvent en effet suffire a\u0300 projeter un monde hors de son orbite.<\/p>\n<p>La masse de la plane\u0300te la situe, en outre, dans une zone peu peuple\u0301e des observations de microlentille, surnomme\u0301e le \u00ab de\u0301sert d\u2019Einstein \u00bb, correspondant a\u0300 des masses interme\u0301diaires entre les plane\u0300tes ge\u0301antes le\u0301ge\u0300res et les naines brunes. A\u0300 l\u2019avenir, ce type de mesure devrait se multiplier gra\u0302ce, notamment, au te\u0301lescope spatial Nancy Grace Roman, dont le lancement est pre\u0301vu en 2027. L\u2019engin a e\u0301te\u0301 conc\u0327u pour de\u0301tecter des milliers d\u2019e\u0301ve\u0301nements de microlentille.
