Africa-Press – Seychelles. On July 11, the world commemorates International Population Day. The theme for this year is: ‘A world of 8 billion; towards a resilient future for all, harnessing opportunities and ensuring rights and choices for all’.
“As the theme suggests, there are 8 billion people living today but not all of them have equal rights and opportunities. Too many individuals continue to experience discrimination, harassment, and violence based on their gender, ethnicity, race, religion, class, disability, and sexual orientation.
“As Seychelles joins the global community for this commemoration, the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Family invites the Seychelles population to come together and reflect on the theme ‘Mon Fanmir, Mon Leker’ (‘My Family, My Heart’). The well-being of families is the key influencer for the well-being of any population. Every one of us, men and women, our children, our young people, people with
disabilities and older people within the family setting all have an important role to play in creating a culture in our families of harnessing opportunities and ensuring rights and choices for all as per the theme of population day this year. If we all have our families at heart; no matter what differences exist between us, we shall have a very productive population.
“For this reason, the ministry would like to acknowledge everyone who is taking on the responsibility of care and protection of all vulnerable individuals in our population, particularly, children, the elderly, and people living with a disability. We must thrive to eliminate all forms of discrimination that still exist in our population. I call out to all families, all Seychellois, and all individuals to spare no efforts to respect the uniqueness of each person and to have tolerance for diversity. We must have a culture that allows for everyone in our population to be able to flourish and develop their individual abilities to the maximum potential.
“The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Family has intensified the networking strategy to ensure that all partners, in the government sector, civil society and the private sector are on board to ensure that physical protection, extension of children and old-age care, cultural, spiritual, mental and economic aspects of all families are maintained and sustained. However, for this to happen, each member of our population has a responsibility to undertake and a role to play. Performing one’s responsibility and engaging to not only talk about these values but to live them.
“To conclude, I would like to reassure our population that the government will not hesitate to intervene to ensure the protection of its population against all forms of discrimination, abuse and other violations of its rights, as we believe firmly in the theme set for the international population day for this year. It is indeed challenging, but we must never cease to keep working at it for as long as it takes to achieve equal rights and equal opportunities for all members of our population. Wishing you all a happy population day!”
