Africa-Press – Seychelles. Liza Rene-Cosgrow and Fabio Williams clinch wins to head championships
Round seven of the seniors karting championship for the Masters SF1 class and Intermediates SF2 was held last weekend and it produced winners who have now taken the lead in their respective championship categories.
In the Masters class, Liza Rene-Cosgrow’s win has taken her to the top of the table after six of the scheduled ten-round championships.
In Sunday’s race, Rene-Cosgrow was at the forefront for the qualifiers, pre-final and finals, but was evenly matched through by Dave Rene and Marc Delcy.
In the 10-lap final she made a good start, while Dave had to defend from Marc Delcy and after a few clashes earlier, they got off cleanly this time with Liza immediately opening small lead with Dave similarly over Marc. During this time, Rennick Bonnelame starting in P4 had already run into trouble when his kart bottomed out onto the track and broke his chain leading him with no drive and having to watch by the trackside. As the race reached the half-way mark, both Liza and Dave had opened a big lead over Marc, and with three laps left Dave, who had caught the pacing on Liza, tried to pass into the “S” bend and ran over the kerb, immediately losing his chain too and coasted to a halt with no drive.
This left the lucky Marc to cruise to P2 but Dave was credited with P3 for completing seven out of the 10 laps and also claiming a bonus point for the fastest race lap time of 33.40 seconds.
This puts Liza six points ahead with 147 points in the championship with Dave second on 141, Marc third on 120, Rennick 46 and Steven Rosalie, who was absent, with 12.
In the Intermediates, Fabio Williams retook the championship lead again after losing it for missing the past event with a dominant win as well as taking the bonus point for fastest Intermediate lap of 44.277.
In their 10-lap final Fabio got off well from pole position with Denilson Melanie in P2 and Eric Maillet P3. As the race progressed, Carlos Quatre would have been on pole had he not made a mistake of thinking that the pre-final was over two laps from the end while comfortably leading.
He started from last position and had passed all ahead of him by the end to take a well-earned third place to earn him the “Best performance of the day” award.
Eric had to settle for P4 while Terence Anderson took P5 and Dean Maillet P7 with Mitra Labrosse taking a distant P8.
Fabio (122) now takes a 2-point lead over Dean on 120, followed by Denilson 111, Carlos 101, Mitra 98, Eric 95, Christian Bastienne 85 and Jean David-Melanie 74 who were both absent, and Terence 64.
In both the senior categories the championship is still wide open, but with dropped points coming into play soon and with only four round everything is still possible.
Their next round takes place on Sunday August 28.
