First Lady Linda Ramkalawan hosts reception for retired nurses and teachers

Africa-Press – Seychelles. First Lady Linda Ramkalawan on Thursday hosted a tea reception nicknamed Hug in a Mug to show appreciation and gratitude to retired teachers and nurses.

A group of 40 ladies most of whom have spent over 40 years in their respective fields attended the reception which took place at the Family House at Bel Eau.

The activity coincided with Senior Citizens Day observed on August 21.

Addressing her guests, Mrs Ramkalawan thanked them for their devotion in their field of work – both very demanding fields that are teaching and nursing – and recognised that these two professions are not merely jobs but a vocation.

“This reception is simply to say thank you to you nurses and teachers who have given your time, compassion and even sacrificed your personal life to give to the community and the country. It is also to create a platform for you to reconnect after retirement in a pleasing atmosphere,” Mrs Ramkalawan remarked.

She said very often retired teachers, nurses or colleagues from different other professions only meet each other again at funerals and wakes of deceased colleagues.

She expressed the hope that after this gathering the friendships and contacts established will be maintained and the friends will remain in touch and be there for each other in times of need.

The guests interacted with the First Lady and reminisced and talked about their current routines over a cup of tea while being entertained by live traditional music and performances by the ladies themselves.

At the end of the event, each guest received a traditional enamel mug, a flower arrangement and their printed souvenir photo with the First Lady as a token.

Members of the group welcomed the initiative by Mrs Ramkalawan and said it has really been a very relaxing moment and they have promised to remain in touch with each other.

Hug in a Mug will be an annual event hosted by the First Lady and the reception will also be hosted for retirees on Praslin and La Digue.

The accompanying photos show some highlights of the event.
