The police have confirmed that they are conducting an investigation into an incident that happened Sunday night after the political rally of the Seychelles Democratic Union (LDS), Roche Caiman, where the Minister of Transport, Antony Derjacques, was a police officer who was working with his vehicle .
In a press conference yesterday morning at the central police station, Anvil, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ron Bonnelame, said that the incident happened just after the rally and while the guests were starting to leave.
He said that an officer in the traffic section was beaten while he was doing his job and directing traffic after the encounter.
“This incident happened in the evening, and he had his white shirt in his hand and his ‘high-visibility vest’ on him,” according to DCP Bonnelame.
He added that the officer was on the line that divided the two weeks up and down when the incident happened.
According to DCP Bonnelame, the officer was taken to the hospital by ambulance, where he was examined, treated and released, but later that night he returned to the hospital because his condition worsened, and at the time of the press conference, the officer was admitted hospital
According to DCP Bonnelame, the officer was injured in the head, arm and leg.
He says that the driver of this transport, Minister Derjacques, did not go through all the formalities, including tests to measure the level of alcohol in his body. And this was done at the office of the central traffic section by traffic officers.
“The person who was reading, we have done the formalities, ‘breathalizer test’, which is zero. We interviewed him and then we released him and then the investigation continued,” DCP Bonnelame said.
He confirmed that the test showed that the level of alcohol in his body was zero.
On the question of the speed at which he was going, DCP Bonnelame said that “at this time the traffic cannot be fast, because it is a time when everyone is going their own way, the traffic is slow but only when our investigation is over that we will determine what exactly happened or how it happened.He says that the incident has now been handed over to the Mont Fleuri police, and that they went to the area where the accident happened on Sunday night, to make a ‘sketch plan’. The traffic section has also handed over all the documentation to the station.
Meanwhile, in another incident that occurred on October 8, 2022, where an officer damaged the car of a Glacis civilian, by breaking his windshield, DCP Bonnelame said that disciplinary action was taken against the police officer, and his case went before Internal Affairs who takes disciplinary action with the police.
He said that the Police Commissioner, who is not in the country at the moment, will give his final decision on what will happen to the officer on his return, before this Friday.
According to DCP Bonnelame, the officer said that he was speeding behind the lot with a police equipment in his hand when he noticed that the vehicle that he had arrested was not giving any indication that he was going to be arrested. Following this, the driver registered his complaint with Cordgard.
