Africa-Press – Seychelles. Said Lesperance from Praslin secondary school is the Speaker of the 18th Seychelles National Youth Assembly (SNYA) cohort.
He was elected on Saturday morning at the International Conference Centre (ICCS) during an induction and grooming session for the 24 students from secondary schools all over the country as well as post-secondary institutions who had been elected by their peers during SNYA elections in their respective schools.
In the past students were nominated by their respective schools and learning institutions to sit in the youth assembly.
The session for the young parliamentarians aged 14-17 years, was organised by the Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC) and facilitated by Kevin Vidot from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Family, also a former speaker of the 6th cohort of the SNYA.
Apart from Speaker Lesperance, Dylan Freminot from Anse Boileau secondary school was elected as deputy Speaker while Yuginie Aglae from Seychelles Business Studies Academy (SBSA) was elected as the Clerk and Melissa Marie from Belonie secondary school the deputy Clerk. At 14 years old, Said Lesperance is the youngest Speaker in the history of SNYA.
Apart from asserting knowledge on the objectives of SNYA and the objective of the youth assembly programme, the young honourables were also able to familiarise themselves with the Standing Orders and Oath of Allegiance. They also went through the code of conduct and engaged in a mock sitting.
The formal induction of the SNYA office bearers will take place on April 22, 2023.
The young honourables are the voice of not only those in their respective schools but of all young Seychellois across the country.
