Africa-Press – Seychelles. ‘Let’s take time with our families to create better memories together’

“As Seychelles joins the global community to commemorate the International Day of the Families, the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Family invites all families in Seychelles to come together to reflect on the International theme ‘Demographic Trends and Families’ as well as our local theme adopted since 2022: ‘Mon Fanmir, Mon Leker’.

“The International Day of Families celebrated on May 15 every year provides an opportunity

to highlight the importance of family related issues. The day also serves to increase the knowledge on the social, economic and demographic process affecting families.

“Seychelles being a small island developing state with specific needs, the essence and existence of healthy, functional and happy families is imperatively important. Thus, an in-depth analysis of the demographic trends and their impact on families in Seychelles must be one of the key duties of the Family department and its stakeholders moving forward.

“Seychelles as a nation is gradually being affected by the effects of changes of quite a few

demographic trends such as being an ageing population and low birth rate, among others. These trends and their impact on our families and societies need to be analysed, discussed at length and a plan of action needs to be devised to address them collectively. This of course will require various stakeholders to collaborate with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Family for its successful implementation.

“It cannot be stressed enough how much each family unit is vital for the wellbeing of our society. Each and every one of us, men and women, our children, our youths and older people within the family setting; we all have an important role to play in improving our families, and especially giving our children a better family experience as they are growing up.

“I would like to therefore acknowledge family members who are taking on the responsibility of care and protection of their children, elderly and the disabled the preservation of our cultural and moral and spiritual values. Your efforts, no matter how small, are contributing towards improving our communities and society. The government recognises that without these strong families within the society, the country as a whole will not achieve its social nor economic development goals.

“The theme ‘Mon Fanmir, Mon Leker’ from the Ministry, continues to be a call for all families

regardless of location, size or type, to take time with our families to create better memories

together and to always keep our families close to our hearts; the organ which pumps precious

oxygen to the rest of the body, just like each family unit which functions well contributes to the

wellbeing of our country just like the oxygen being pumped by our hearts.

“I salute the programmes and projects being implemented by various entities to provide services intending to improve the quality of life of our families in Seychelles. I believe that we can do more, and I believe that we can have better impact to transform our families and society as we move forward.

“I wish all families in Seychelles much happiness and all the best for the future.”
