Africa-Press – Seychelles. In commemoration of the International Day of the Family yesterday, the Family department held a one-day workshop to assess what has been done in the past year and how the department could collaborate with partners to improve programmes and activities targeting the families.

The workshop was held at the International Conference Centre (ICCS) in the presence of First Lady Linda Ramkalawan; Minister for Youth, Sports and Family, Marie-Celine Zialor; the principal secretary in the Family department, Clive Roucou; and representatives from other partner organisations including the Local Government department.

The international theme for this year is ‘Demographic changes and their impact on families’, and it is a day used to raise awareness of the significance of families, which is considered the most basic unit of society.

The aim of the Family department is to advocate for healthy individuals within healthy families and also touch the vulnerable families and targeted groups. Last year the ministry adopted a two-year national theme ‘Mon Fanmir, Mon Leker’.

In his opening statement, PS Roucou said it was a great honour to be holding the workshop as it demonstrated the care they have for all families.

“The family of Seychelles joins the families of the world to celebrate this day, a day which is very important,” he said.

PS Roucou said the Family department and its partners join together to bring forth the most positive elements and values that would make a family thrive.

“The Family department is continuously working on our policies to assess the ways to help and support families, re-instating them on the level they once were. As we all know a family is the most important unit in a society,” he said.

The official launch of the workshop was followed by a short video from the Suzette family of Anse Boileau, who are members of the group ‘Melodi Lafanmiy’. The eldest son, Gabriel Suzette, said that they joined the group because they have similar vision and goals.

“We wanted to help those in need and support them in becoming more confident in themselves and of course spreading love while doing so, because not everyone knows what true love feels like and the opportunity that the group gives us to help brighten even just one person’s day is very rewarding,” he said.

The workshop continued with presentations and testimonies by multiple organisations and partners such as the Cascade Family Council, Quality of Life division, faith-based organisations as well as the National Bureau of Statistics, all of which shared their own contributions towards Seychelles’ families.
