Africa-Press – Seychelles. As part of its annual activities, the GranKaz has donated R50,000 to the Seychelles Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA), an annual gesture that it hopes would greatly help the NGO with its day to day activities, tending to the helpless animals.

The handover of the donation took place on Monday morning at the SSPCA compound at Providence.

The public relations and communication manager from GranKaz, Sharma Amesbury, said that they have been sponsoring and supporting the SSPCA for a long time now, as they realised how vital funding assistance is to the organisation.

“As a non-profit NGO it relies heavily on donor funds to be able to do its work,” she said.

The centre is currently housing 220 animals in a space which is meant for 150 animals, thus putting a strain on the service.

“Ever since the CSR taxes were revoked, funds for their needs have become hard to come by, and so at GranKaz we decided, even when the CSR taxes were revoked, that we were going to continue with our commitment, to our corporate citizenship efforts and SSPCA is a big one on that list,” she said.

The animal welfare officer at SSPCA, Jimmy Marie, said he was thankful to GranKaz for its generous donation and the SSPCA welcomes any sort of help from other organisations. “Honestly we are so grateful for the donation, we really appreciate everything they have done for us and we welcome these acts of kindness with open arms because right now it is extremely difficult for us at SSPCA to manage,” he said.

He said one of biggest issues was the lack of medications and the donation will go towards the purchase of medicines for the animals, thus relieving a lot of pressure on the NGO.

He added that part of the funds will also go towards SSPCA’s programmes, including re-instating the sterilisation programme in different communities and also improve its establishment.
