Africa-Press – Seychelles. The Ministry of Employment and Social Affairs in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conducted a one-week workshop with the participation of officers from various ministries, departments and potential licensees on drafting transport security regulations for radioactive materials.

The IAEA has proposed a model regulations and the main objective of the workshop was to consult the national stakeholders on the contents of the proposed model.

The regulations will apply for the domestic transportation/conveyance of radioactive sources and focus on the security measures needed for transportation.

Safety and security during transport of radioactive sources represent two sides of the same coin. Transport safety aims to protect members of the public from the radioactive contents of a package while transport security aims to guard radioactive materials from falling into wrong hands by adopting relevant security measures. Radioactive sources are being shipped nationally and internationally through different modes of transport every day and if not secured properly may lead to serious radiological damages.

During the five-day workshop, participants learned and discussed on the roles and responsibilities of potential licensees, evaluated existing national capacity and make proposals on gaps identified.

The IAEA expert emphasised the importance of establishing such regulations and also shared his experiences and challenges.

The proposed regulations were also revised and participants provided their comments and suggestions.

At the end of the workshop, the participants expressed their appreciation and satisfaction with the outcome of the event.

The Employment department will be meeting with other potential licensees and other stakeholders before the regulation is finalised.
