Africa-Press – Seychelles. ‘Strengthen the actions so that finally we have a Seychelles free of drug problems’

“On the occasion of the International Day against Substance Abuse and Illegal Trafficking, which falls today on June 26, United Seychelles asks the government together with the nation of Seychelles to strengthen actions so that we can finally have a Seychelles free of drug problems.

“In line with the theme for this year, it is more than time for the nation of Seychellois to stop stigmatizing those who are victims of this scourge and have compassion towards them. We need to recognize that the drug problem is complex and will take a long time to resolve.

“United Seychelles, then, thinks that for us to succeed, the country needs to invest a lot more in education, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation.

“The United Seychelles also wants to use this opportunity to express concern with the quantity and quality of drugs that are entering the country, and request the authorities to be more serious and show more transparency in the way the seized drugs are handled.

“Finally, as a community we need to sit down and have a frank and open debate about addiction in our country. Research has shown that many young people who fall into addiction are victims of sexual abuse in their childhood and research has also shown that addiction is closely related to our culture, which began 250 years ago during the time of slavery. If we are not ready to talk to the ground so that we have a frank discussion about these things, our fight against drugs will be in vain.

“United Seychelles thanks all the actors who are playing this difficult role to fight this drug scourge.

“Thank you.”
