Africa-Press – Seychelles. Through the Seychelles Consul in Lyon, France, Mrs. Virginie Mathieu, a delegation of four experts from the Center Léon Bérard, specializing in the fight against cancer, is carrying out this week in Mahé an inventory focused on cancer and palliative care to complement the existing partnership.

Mrs. Anne Miermont, General Secretary and Head of Partnerships and International Development of the Center Léon Bérard; Pr Gisèle Chvetzoff, Head of Department and Associate Professor of Medicine; Dr Andy Karabajakian, Head of Clinic; and Dr Yao Chen, Surgical Oncologist; also met with Mrs. Peggy Vidot, Minister of Health, who was delighted with the collaboration, the visit and the possibilities that are opening up.

The delegation visited all the care and support facilities for cancer patients.

She was able to talk at length with the people working there, including the staff of the oncology center, the cancer registry, the hospice at Anse Nord Est, the palliative care program at home, but also with the Cancer Concern Association.

It was an opportunity to exchange fruitfully. “Indeed, the purpose of all these meetings was to get to know each other better in order to work better together,” said Dr. Bernard Valentin, Secretary General at the Ministry of Health.

During the last twenty months following the signing of the Léon Bérard-Ministry of Health agreement (agreement signed in October 2021), the care of the 29 Seychellois patients has been discussed between the Seychelles and Lyon teams.

This made it possible to avoid patients having to go abroad for an expensive expertise but also to avoid a physically and psychologically exhausting trip.

“This week’s discussions will further enrich the multidisciplinary consultation meetings that we have been holding with the Léon Bérard Center for more than a year now”, underlines Dr Johanna Rapanarilala, doctor at the oncology center and key person in this collaboration.

All agree on the necessity and usefulness of these meetings.

“We have been truly amazed by what you have been able to do as a country, with so few human resources and so few other means. Your public health indicators are impressive. It is a pleasure to work with you”, agreed the delegation.
