Africa-Press – Seychelles. The Seychelles Prison Service has confirmed that at around 3.30pm on Thursday, July 20, 2023, officers from the prison security unit stopped and detained a male inmate who was attempting to smuggle items regarded as contraband onto prison premises.
In a communique issued yesterday the Seychelles Prison Service (SPS) said the inmate engaged in a rehabilitation programme at SPS Montagne Posée prison and assigned specific duties at the prison campus itself, had been monitored earlier in the day prior to being detained for suspicious behaviour.
“The inmate when stopped at an access gate resisted but was restrained with contraband in his possession. As the matter is under investigation for possible charges before the court, the suspect inmate is currently at a CTU holding cell on the prison campus at Montagne Posée,” read the statement.
In another unrelated incident, the prison service said four staff have been dismissed from duty for various violations of prison regulations and acts of indiscipline.
“One former member has been detained attempting to smuggle in cigarettes to a prison, another for being under the influence of alcohol, another for failing to report for duty with a final warning, and another for various other violations,” it stated.
The prison service said it is also reviewing the performance and issues reported contrary to prison regulations, for a number of other staff.
