Africa-Press – Seychelles. The Seychelles Community Training Institute (SECTI) has officially handed over two new garden sheds sponsored by Seychelles Breweries Foundation to the Plaisance Home for the Elderly, as part of their adaptation to climate change project.
This was through a short ceremony at the home yesterday morning.
The aim of the project is to provide the elderly residents with a space for their own sustainable agriculture.
The chairperson of SECTI, Marie-Nella Azemia, said it was to also give them a new sense of responsibility because they are the ones who will be taking care of the plants and vegetables in the new sheds.
“This should help them stay active but also to eat healthy products grown straight from their own labour and care,” she said.
Jelina Havelock, speaking on behalf of the Plaisance Home for the Elderly, thanked the Seychelles Breweries and SECTI for the great initiative.
“I am honestly very happy because the residents at this age tend to have nothing to do during the day and this creates an activity for them. I see that they are looking forward to working in these sheds,” she said.
The setting up of the two sheds took about six months and this was done by Gabriel Prudence, a self-employed farmer who usually works on these types of small projects.
He stressed on the importance to plant at home. “I can say that this is a very good project to do. Our elderly need a little pastime and nurturing the plants will definitely serve as that. We also ensured that it is elderly-friendly by having it elevated so they do not have to bend too low,” he said.
SECTI said the project initially started with the La Retraite Home for the Elderly and it hopes to bring it to two or three more places, with the help of donors.
