Africa-Press – Seychelles. The teams of defending champion Senegal and Egypt, runner-up, are out of the African Nations Championship (CAN’2023) after “falling” in the round of 16 of the competition.
Senegal were eliminated by the hosts, Ivory Coast, on penalties (5-4) after a 1-1 draw during regular time and extra time.
For their part, the “Pharaohs” went through the same situation but against the Democratic Republic of Congo, that is, they also failed in shots from 11 meters, after being equal to 1-1 for 120 minutes.
Another curiosity is that in the group stage Senegal was the only team to win all three games, coming first in group C, with nine points.
In the opposite direction, Egypt accomplished the feat of reaching the round of 16 without victories, with three draws, achieving second place in group B, won by Cape Verde, with just three points.
What’s more, in the CAN’2021 final, held in Cameroon, the Senegal team beat Egypt on penalties (4-2), after the match ended with a zero score after extra time.
Senegalese striker Sadio Mané scored the winning penalty after missing a penalty in the 7th minute of the game.
The final at the Olembe Stadium in Yaoundé, Cameroon, was billed as a “battle” between Liverpool stars Sadio Mané of Senegal and Mohamed Salah of Egypt.
On the way to the final, Egypt won on penalties in the round of 16 and in the semi-finals.
Senegal achieved the unprecedented title after two lost finals (2002 and 2019) and Egypt was looking for its eighth African title.
It should be noted that the Cape Verdean team is already qualified to compete in the quarter-finals of the 34th African Nations Championship, CAN’2023.
The national team now awaits the winner of the duel between Morocco and South Africa, which takes place this Tuesday, at 7:00 pm, to find out their opponent in the quarter-finals.
Angola, Nigeria, Guinea Conakry, DR Congo, Cape Verde and Ivory Coast are the six teams already qualified for the quarter-finals of CAN’2023, with only the winners of the qualifiers Morocco x South Africa and Mali x Burkina Faso to be known, matches which take place this Tuesday afternoon/evening.
