'Sick with disappointment': Steve Hofmeyr's Cape Town stadium flop after only 8 000 tickets sold

Africa-Press – Seychelles. Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmeyr is “thoroughly sick with disappointment” after postponing his Cape Town IKOON concert and only selling 8 000 tickets.

The concert is supposed to celebrate Hofmeyr’s 60th birthday.

The event would have taken place on 29 March at the DHL Stadium, with musical guests Juanita du Plessis, Karlien van Jaarsveld, Bobby van Jaarsveld, Nadine, Kurt Darren, Bok van Blerk and more.

The DHL Stadium has a capacity of 55 000.

Hofmeyr took to social media on Wednesday to vent his frustration in a message written to his fans.

He wrote in Afrikaans that he had spoken to concert promoters the previous day about the event and “tried everything to go forward with Cape Town IKOON”.

“But, as with most concerts, I am at the mercy of the promoters’ cashbook, and if it doesn’t work out, there’s little I can do about it,” he said.

“My biggest concern is, of course, if you bought your ticket or incurred other durable expenses,” he wrote.

“We even arranged a holiday around the Cape concert,” the singer continued. “Thank you for your patience. Thank you to the singers who understand.”

“For us, 8 000 people would be more than enough,” he added. He told fans that he’ll relay more information once he has been updated.

Hofmeyr shared an additional statement about the postponement.

“As Cool Concerts, we were convinced that we would have a good turnout in the stadium due to the absence of big Afrikaans shows in Cape Town,” the statement said.

“We simply cannot host the concert for the number of fans who purchased tickets in a stadium format. We have already contacted all the role players, and we will relaunch the marketing campaign in the run-up to a new date.”

“With Afrikaans is Groot and Krone not being presented in Cape Town, this is the last attempt at a major Afrikaans concert in Cape Town,” the statement added.

Hofmeyr also has a conservative online show called Steve’s Monday Chats, where he discusses a range of topics, including current events and updates on his music career.

In the latest episode, he discussed SA’s Human Rights Day, Joshlin Smith, Trump, Elon Musk, Israel-Palestine, and more.
