Africa-Press – Seychelles. The Ministry of Environment, Climate, Energy and Natural Resources, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme is hosting a two-day national workshop to enhance the country’s capacity for the identification and management of trade in hazardous chemicals.
This is being done under the Global Environment Facility-Implementing Sustainable Low and Non-Chemical Development in Small Island Developing States (GEF-ISLANDS) Indian Ocean Project. Various stakeholders are in attendance, including the ministry’s representatives, the Landscape and Waste Management Agency (LWMA) and workers from the Trade department.
When officially opening the session yesterday morning at the Savoy Resort and Spa, the principal secretary for Environment and Natural Resources, Nanette Laure, said Seychelles’ unique vulnerability as a small island developing state, means that limited land space amplifies the risks linked to hazardous chemicals and waste.
She said strengthening national capacity remains central to protecting the population and maintaining environmental integrity.
