The department of Transport held its Long Service Awards ceremony last Friday at the Harbour Light Restaurant, recognising the dedication of 25 staff members who have served the department for periods ranging from five to 44 years. Among those honoured was Principal Secretary Patrick André, who received special recognition for his remarkable 44 years of continuous service.
Patrick André’s journey within the transport sector is marked by perseverance, dedication and an unwavering passion for quality work. Currently serving as principal secretary in the department of Transport, Mr André brings with him an impressive four decades of experience in the same field, a career that began immediately after he left school.
He started working at the age of 18, securing his first job as a technician within the department. At the time, he earned a modest salary of R700 per month, but what he lacked in financial reward was more than compensated by determination and ambition. After nine months, he was given the opportunity to move into the transport sector as a controller and road technician; a role that presented a new challenge, as it was the first time a technician had been introduced into that specific area of transport.
