Africa-Press – Seychelles. <\/strong><\/span>The resumption of club football after the Christmas break was scheduled for yesterday, but the local football governing body has decided to postpone it over growing concerns by the health authorities about the new variant of coronavirus \u2012 Omicron \u2012 and the hike in the number of cases.<\/p>\n

Seychelles Football Federation (SFF) chief executive George Bibi told the media yesterday morning during a press conference at the Maison Football that the club competitions commission has decided to postpone the restart of all competitions.<\/p>\n

SFF director of competitions and club licensing, Clive Delori\u00e9, was also present for the meeting with the press.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough the decision by the health authorities on the taking place of sporting activities right now is not clear, and also because some clubs have told us they have been asked by the police to stop training, we have taken the decision to postpone the resumption of all competitions,\u201d said Mr Bibi.<\/p>\n

He added that the SFF was also inclined on taking the decision as the F\u00e9d\u00e9ration internationale de Football Association (Fifa) international break is between January 24 and February 2.<\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully we will be able to resume playing football in early February,\u201d said Mr Bibi who added that Seychelles and the world will have to learn to live with Covid-19.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs far as I can see, we have to learn to live with Covid-19 as it is there to stay. Sports are being played around the world despite players contracting Covid-19 and there is no research to prove that sportsmen and women can catch Covid when practising their sports,\u201d argued Mr Bibi.<\/p>\n

The 2021-2022 league season kicked off on November 23, 2021 following the cancellation of the 2020-2021 season in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

Since the SFF did not get the green light from the health authorities to begin the new season 2021-2022 in August to end in May 2022 as planned, the ongoing league competition is a short one.<\/p>\n

The SFF expects to complete the SFF league in May 2022 in time to resume the 2022-2023 league season in August 2022. As a result, the SFF had to sacrifice two knockout competitions \u2012 Airtel Cup and SFF Cup \u2012 last year.<\/p>\n

The ongoing SFF league competitions include the men\u2019s Premier League divided into two \u2012 Mah\u00e9 Premier League for teams on Mah\u00e9, and Inner Islands Premier League for teams from Praslin and La Digue. The second and third division sides have been merged together in a Championship league.<\/p>\n

The men\u2019s Premier league has been designed in that manner to minimise the cost of travel by teams in this time of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

The Mah\u00e9 Premier League is being played on a round robin basis (home and away) while the Inner Islands Premier League will be played over three legs. The three top finishers from the two leagues will clash with each other in the one legged, either home or away, in the SFF Premier League Championship.<\/p>\n

As the Mah\u00e9 Premier League is an open league, the remaining five teams shall continue playing each other to accumulate points to earn the highest finish possible. The team who finish last will be relegated to the Championship league, while the one who take seventh position will meet the Championship runners-up in a two-legged playoff.<\/p>\n

No teams from the Inner islands Premier League will be relegated but the top three will progress to meet the top three from the Mah\u00e9 Premier league for the SFF Premier League Championship competition. As for the remaining three teams, they will fight for a best finish possible.<\/p>\n

The Mah\u00e9 Premier League consists of Red Star Defence Forces FC, Foresters FC, St John Bosco FC, St Louis FC, Northern Dynamo FC, PTL Bazar Brothers FC, St Michel FC and Real Maldives FC.<\/p>\n

The Inner Islands Premier League is made up of Light Stars FC, Anse R\u00e9union FC, Revengers FC, Santos FC, C\u00f4te d\u2019Or FC and La Passe FC.<\/p>\n

Glacis FC, Rovers FC, LMS United FC, Au Cap FC, Marine Maintenance FC, Tigers FC, Perseverance FC, Mont Fleuri FC, Bel Ombre FC, Beau Vallon FC, Anse Royale FC, Bel Air FC, Mont Buxton FC and West Boys United FC play in the Championship League.<\/p>\n
