In June, US $80 million was sold while the demand was US $81 million and in July, ending July 26, it was US $62 million, while the demand was US $64 million.

She said the main reason for an increase in demand is due to the rise in the prices of commodities on the international market.

“Despite the increase in demand, when we look at January 2022 to date, the amount of foreign exchange sold is US $477 million while the demand is US $459 million, meaning the economy has been able to retain US $18 million,” explained Ms Abel.

When compared to the same period last year, Seychelles’ economy retained US $14 million. In 2020 it lost US $8.4 million, mainly due to Covid-19, whereas in 2019, the economy retained US $21 million during the same period.

CBS said 64 percent of foreign exchange has been sold to date compared to 2021.

According to statistics, tourism remains the highest foreign exchange earner, contributing 37 percent of the foreign exchange followed by fisheries at 4.3%.

“Recent development in the Seychelles economy, being led by tourism, keeps rising compared to last year and revenue as well. If it continues as is then we will see that the economic activity and what is being generated will be higher than last year. To date with information received up till June, we have seen that the sector has contributed US $257 million, compared to US $87 million in 2021,” said Ms Abel.

As for demand by sector, wholesale and rental are the highest with 22 percent, followed by petroleum which is at 13 percent and telecommunications at 10.5 percent.

CBS said exchange rate remains stable. According to its statistics, as at July 27, a dollar was 14.03 and one euro was 14.37. Ms Abel said this was a small depreciation of three cents on the dollar and around six cents on the euro compared to the previous week.

The country’s reserves as at July 27, 2022 was US $650 million, out of which US $501 million can be spent.

CBS also says that the month-on-month inflation is 0.3%

Ms Abel said that the price of commodity remains high, and it is 62 percent higher than in 2019. Commodities such as flour have increased by 6.2 percent, cooking oil by 16.8 percent and other commodities like sugar by 0.9 percent.

There is also an increase in the cost for accommodation, water and electricity which has gone up by 4.4 percent and transportation has risen by 6.7 percent. This is directly linked to fuel. A barrel of Brent crude oil was at R104 a barrel as of July 26. CBS said although it is predicted to be slightly lower in 2023, selling at US $93.75, it will still be higher than 2021 when it was at US $70.89 a barrel and in 2020 when it was at US $41.69.

Meanwhile, Ms Abel said the uncertainty worldwide does not bode well for Seychelles, which is isolated from all markets and everybody should be mindful of this.

Earlier this week, the International Monetary Fund revised the global economic growth for 2022, from 3.6 to 3.2 percent.

“We can say that a reduction of 0.4 percent is not a lot but when we look at it globally, it is a huge loss that the world will face. This affects economies, personal incomes. Every day based on the decision taken internationally, the level of uncertainty is becoming more negative meaning the global economy, and including Seychelles will be negative. What is most worrying is the prices of commodities continue to rise because of that,” explained Ms Abel.

She added that because central banks have to ensure stability in prices, they have set the target for inflation rate at 2 percent and at present the majority of countries are above this target.

“That is why we are seeing the tightening in the financial market, which means that economic activities will slow down,” she added.

She called on government, businesses and individual to be mindful of these realities, when they are making decisions, because their predictions is that what is happening will not improve overnight and might worsen in 2023, especially if the Ukraine crisis does not end.

She also added that the world has not recovered entirely from the impact of Covid-19. She therefore said that shifts in individual and collective behaviour are critical and there need to be careful discussion and alignment in policy direction to reflect the current economic challenges.

“In Seychelles we have to be realistic, prudent and disciplined on the financial side, because we might not have enough resources if the economy slows down, meaning the amount of revenue that we produce will decrease and government will not be able to collect enough taxes that it had planned earlier this year, because the economy worldwide is more negative than it was at the beginning of the year,” said Ms Abel.

Meanwhile the Central Bank said it is continuously monitoring what is happening in the market globally closely and in the event it has to tighten the monetary policy, it will do so.

“We have to take decisions that will bring us positive results in the long run.”

For More News And Analysis About Seychelles Follow Africa-Press

Africa-Press – Seychelles.
