Africa-Press – Seychelles. <\/strong><\/span>The Seychelles delegation from the 2022 Commonwealth Games, held in Birmingham, England between July 28 and August 8 are expected back in the country today.<\/b><\/p>\n

Seychelles was being represented at the Games by 27 athletes who competed in eight sporting disciplines, precisely athletics, boxing, cycling, judo, squash, swimming, weightlifting and table tennis.<\/p>\n

None of our local athletes managed a podium finish in Burmingham, while swimmers Adam Moncherry and Tyler Fred managed to finish first in two of the preliminaries or heats.<\/p>\n

Paddlers Laura Sinon and Mick Cr\u00e9a teamed up to also register a win at the Games in the mixed-doubles competition.<\/p>\n

Cr\u00e9a and Sinon played their first match in the round of 64 at the National Exhibition Centre against Stephen Reilly and Touea Titana of Fiji, winning 3-2, before being eliminated.<\/p>\n

The set scores were 11 – 9, 12 – 14, 11 – 3, 5 – 11 and 10 – 12.<\/p>\n

Swimmer Adam Moncherry finished first in his heat in the men’s 50m freestyle where he clocked 24.10 seconds to lead heat number four and set up a new personal best, while Fred finished first in his heat race, despite not qualifying for the finals of the men\u2019s 200m freestyle.<\/p>\n

Fred clocked one minute and 58.46 seconds (1:58.46) to finish first in the heat.<\/p>\n

Ned Azemia made it to the final of the men’s 400m hurdles, after qualifying in heat number two, clocking 51.27 seconds.<\/p>\n

In the final, Azemia finished seventh overall in 51.71 seconds.<\/p>\n

Seychelles\u2019 flag bearer at the Games\u2019 opening ceremony, boxer Keddy Agnes who competes in the over 92kg \u2013 super heavyweight \u2013 missed out on the bronze medal after losing his quarter-final bout 0-5 to Sagar Sagar of India.<\/p>\n

In judo, Praslinois Dominic Dugasse missed out on a bronze medal after losing his bronze-medal contest in the men +100 kg against Liam Park of Australia.<\/p>\n

In the elimination round of 16, Dugasse defeated Jamaican Steven Moore by ippon, before losing the quarter-final against Kody Andrews of New Zealand.<\/p>\n

After the repechage, Dugasse was drawn against Kenyan Kalvin Afude, where the Seychellois heavyweight won by ippon, qualifying for the bronze medal contest where he lost to Park.<\/p>\n

The Games was the largest ever held, with 72 participating nations and ticket sales of 1.2 million.<\/p>\n

It was also the first major international multi-sports event to be an integrated event, meaning that the para and non-para games are held at the same time.<\/p>\n

In addition, it was the first games to host more women’s gold medals than men’s.<\/p>\n
