Africa-Press – Seychelles. <\/strong><\/span>The Blue Economy department has successfully secured US $60,000 from the Indian Ocean Rim Association to roll out its educational programme.<\/b><\/p>\n

Since its inception in 2015, the department has been finding means to develop and educate the population about this sector. With the newly acquired funding, the department is planning to launch a series of activities that can be integrated in schools with the help of two consultants.<\/p>\n

Seven years later, there are still some misconceptions about what the Blue Economy really is. With the funding secured, the department will as from the end of September kick-start activities in schools to promote the Blue Economy approach.<\/p>\n

Terrence Crea, principal programme and development officer, explained that the Blue Economy department is putting much emphasis on the educational aspect and sensitisation of the Blue Economy for the public on a national level.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are specifically targeting secondary one students and the activities will be mainly science related projects. It is also important to note that although we will be mainly focusing on science subjects, already Blue Economy has been integrated in the curriculum but we are also seeing how it can be integrated in geography.\u201d<\/p>\n

With this project, Mr Crea hopes that the students will be able to understand the importance of that sector and how they can influence it and benefit from the ocean.<\/p>\n

Another component of the project, once the consultants have worked on its logistics, is to bring it to other countries in the region. Seychelles will be piloting this project.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope that this project will impact the youth in the way they act and have the stakeholders onboard. We already got the approval from the Ministry of Education and we already hired two consultants \u2013 one expert in the ocean and the other one expert in curriculum development. The two consultants will now look into the existing programmes related to the Blue Economy in the school curriculum and will propose new additions,\u201d explained Mr Crea.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn our communication strategy, we found it important to educate our youth\/children about what is the Blue Economy. There are many opportunities for youth in this department. Implementing a Blue Economy approach offers twin advantages of realising economic and social benefits while at the same time improving environmental sustainability and climate resilience. It also promotes equity in access to, development of, and sharing of benefits from marine resources including the ability to mobilise capacity and manage resources. It is our mandate to let the population know how this sector can contribute towards the growth of the country,\u201d explained Elna Etienne, principal information and communication officer.<\/p>\n

With these programmes, the Blue Economy department hopes to change the mindset of our children and youth vis-\u00e0-vis their actions towards the Ocean.<\/p>\n
