{"id":14442,"date":"2022-09-12T14:15:30","date_gmt":"2022-09-12T14:15:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/seychelles\/all-news\/the-ministry-of-transport-is-organizing-a-public-meeting-on-la-digue"},"modified":"2022-09-12T15:55:52","modified_gmt":"2022-09-12T15:55:52","slug":"the-ministry-of-transport-is-organizing-a-public-meeting-on-la-digue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/seychelles\/all-news\/the-ministry-of-transport-is-organizing-a-public-meeting-on-la-digue","title":{"rendered":"The Ministry of Transport is organizing a public meeting on La Digue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Seychelles. <\/strong><\/span><b>Residents discuss the content of the new 2022 transport policy<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The owner of the tourist establishment on La digue wants to maintain the moratorium on 51 electric &#8216;buggy&#8217; which will allow them to repair or replace their buggy.<\/p>\n<p>This was the highlight of the public meeting held on the island on Saturday, September 10 to discuss the new 2022 transport policy.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was held at the Chalet le Bamboo Vert with a full room, where after a presentation by the legal and police team from the Ministry of Transport, residents could clarify their doubts and give suggestions.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister for Transport, Antony Derjacques, affirmed that the ministry and the government want to reduce the amount of transport on the island because it will help maintain the beauty and the symbol of the &#8216;Green Island&#8217; that they envision for La Digue. But we have proposed to put before the council of ministers that the 51 electric &#8216;buggy&#8217; that are already on the island will be maintained and the current owners will be able to repair or replace their &#8216;buggy&#8217; when necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Residents are also concerned with the request to make the transition from transportation that uses gasoline to more ecological ones. The concern is that access to parts and qualified manpower to repair such transport is not easy. However, many are in favor of the proposal to make &#8216;buggy&#8217; taxis that will serve their customers and the community.<\/p>\n<p>This new transport policy on La Digue replaces the one in 2018 and includes gasoline-based transport and more ecological ones such as hybrid and electric. Residents expressed much more interest in electric transportation, which they say is something that customers are increasingly asking for.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding electric bicycles, some residents have expressed concern that in some areas higher up on La Digue, the maximum limit for a bicycle of 300 watts is not enough. It is also an inconvenience for some people with medical problems.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Transport said that they will review certain specific cases and consider whether these people will be able to get permission to use a bicycle with more than 300 watts.<\/p>\n<p>The group that rents bicycles has also proposed to the ministry that the limit of electric bicycles per business, proposed by the police, is increased.<\/p>\n<p>There are more than 250 electric bicycles on the dike. In May of this year and this weekend of September 9 and 10, the Ministry of Transport began to register and issue permits for bicycles under 300 watts. Of the 150 permits that were approved, only 50 people came to collect their permits.<\/p>\n<p>Those who have been inspected by the officers and found to be over the limit, are not qualified and are asked to inspect their motor and redo the procedure.
