Africa-Press – Seychelles. <\/strong><\/span>The Seychelles Maritime Safety Authority (SMSA) and the Seychelles Maritime Academy (SMA) opened a two-week training for the examination, assessment and certification of seafarer in line with the IMO model course 3.12 and 6.09.
\n<\/b>
\nThe course has been long awaited due to delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the closure of borders.<\/p>\n

It is being done in partnership with the International Maritime Organization\u2019s Technical Cooperation Division.<\/p>\n

In his opening remarks, the Minister for Transport, Antony Derjacques, highlighted the great importance of this training for the two institutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth SMSA as a Maritime Safety Authority and SMA as a Maritime Training Academy will benefit immensely from this training which is expected to further enhance the capacity of both entities, with qualified and certified lecturers and examiners required by the country,\u201d said Minister Derjacques.<\/p>\n

More than 21 lecturers and examiners are participating in this training. This is part of the SMSA and SMA\u2019s continuous endeavour to improve the capacity of its staff.<\/p>\n

As for the IMO regional coordinator, Dave Muli, he is delighted that this goal is in line with the Strategic Plan for IMO for the period 2018 to 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt highlights the importance of \u2018improved implementation\u2019 as the number one Strategic Direction and recognises that human and institutional capacity building are at the core of effective implementation and compliance with IMO instruments. This workshop is therefore one of our many Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme activities towards the realisation of this Strategic Direction,\u201d he further explained.<\/p>\n

The opening ceremony of the training took place yesterday morning in the presence of international partners such as the IMO regional coordinator, Dave Muli; the IMO consultants Milhar Fuazudeen and Capt. King Chiragi; chairperson of SMSA, Veronique Laporte; principal secretaries; chief executives and other personnel.<\/p>\n
