{"id":15978,"date":"2022-10-16T05:41:23","date_gmt":"2022-10-16T05:41:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/seychelles\/all-news\/world-sight-day-love-your-eyes-sabvi-hosts-successful-fund-raising-activity"},"modified":"2022-10-16T06:46:31","modified_gmt":"2022-10-16T06:46:31","slug":"world-sight-day-love-your-eyes-sabvi-hosts-successful-fund-raising-activity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/seychelles\/all-news\/world-sight-day-love-your-eyes-sabvi-hosts-successful-fund-raising-activity","title":{"rendered":"World Sight Day \u2013 Love your eyes  \u00a0  Sabvi hosts successful fund-raising activity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Seychelles. <\/strong><\/span><b>To mark this year\u2019s World Sight Day, which falls on the second Thursday in October, members of the Seychelles Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (Sabvi) organised a social activity to raise funds for their association.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The event took place on the grounds of Camion Hall in Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Love Your Eyes\u2019 is the theme for this year\u2019s World Sight Day.<\/p>\n<p>During the activity organised by Sabvi, Cable and Wireless Seychelles also made a donation of R50,000 to help this non-governmental organisation.<\/p>\n<p>Many volunteers came to support Sabvi for this event and they were selling books, clothes, house decorations, delicious local snacks and cakes.<\/p>\n<p>Vision Care was also present to offer free eye tests.<\/p>\n<p>The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IABP) has decided to continue using the slogan \u2018#Love Your Eyes\u2019 for World Sight Day 2022. The \u2018Love Your Eyes\u2019 campaign urges people to put their personal eye health first while fighting for globally accessible, reasonably priced, and readily available eye care.<\/p>\n<p>Chairperson of Sabvi, Brigitte Lablache, thanked all the generous sponsors who helped them in having these activities.<\/p>\n<p>Minister for Health, Peggy Vidot, also came to meet the members of Sabvi and all the volunteers to congratulate them for their services rendered to the group of people with other abilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of our people have lost their eyesight due to health conditions and others due to an unfortunate accident. It is clear that for some, the loss of eyesight could have been prevented. This is not the case for others. The loss of the eyesight is not the end, there is life to continue to live and as a society we should remove the barriers and the way we live around them,\u201d stated Minister Vidot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we always say at the Ministry of Health, prevention and early detection is the best way to go. Let us prevent what can be prevented and let us avoid what can be avoided. Have an eye check regularly,\u201d urged the minister.<\/p>\n<p>The chief executive of CWS, George D\u2019Offay, shared that the company is proud of being part of this activity. \u201cThe donation we are handing to you will help you buy more equipment to help your members. CWS believes that there is lack of awareness among the community of people living with eye sight problems. We want to support Sabvi to promote sensitisation in the community.<\/p>\n<p>Aurria Barbe, a young visually impaired girl who is still at school, shared that she likes school and uses Braille to study but unfortunately there is no maths books or calculator in Braille.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, my mother helps me out and she reads the questions and I give her the answers. I also learned how to play the piano with my mum and by myself. At school, some are bullies whereas some others play with me as a normal child. My wish is to have more books and equipment for us to use, learn and become somebody in society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The secretary of Sabvi, Rosabelle Hoareau, shared that their organisation is only three years old and they are mainly doing awareness programmes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are currently having some programmes on TV\/radio and also writing articles for the print media. We are having more people contacting us. We want people with impaired or no eyesight to come forward and contact us so that we can carry forward our issues like accessibility of roads, buildings etc. We are also still looking for a location to have our meetings.
