Africa-Press – Seychelles. <\/strong><\/span>The Cambridge Dictionary recently updated its entries for \u201cman\u201d and \u201cwoman\u201d to include transgender people.<\/b><\/p>\n

The updates went into effect in October but appear to have gained some attention in December when the dictionary\u2019s expanded definition of \u201cwoman\u201d garnered backlash from conservative commentators on social media, a spokesperson for the Cambridge Dictionary told.<\/p>\n

While the Cambridge Dictionary\u2019s primary definition for \u201cwoman\u201d remains \u201can adult female human being,\u201d a second definition refers to \u201can adult who lives and identifies as female though they may have been said to have a different sex at birth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Example sentences provided by the dictionary include \u201cMary is a woman who was assigned male at birth\u201d and \u201cTheir doctor encouraged them to live as a man for a while before undergoing surgical transition.\u201d<\/p>\n

Press checks from the Cambridge dictionary<\/b> showed that the original definition at the entry for woman remains unchanged and continues to be \u2018an adult female human being\u2019.<\/p>\n

Dictionary.com announced \u201cwoman\u201d as its 2022 word of the year, citing how \u201cthe very matter of the definition of the word \u2018woman\u2019 was at the centre of so many consequential moments, discussions, and decisions in our society.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the outcry deeming Cambridge Dictionary\u2019s new definitions to be a political statement, the spokesperson said that such changes are meant to provide an accurate depiction of how certain words are used in society.<\/p>\n

In 2020, Merriam-Webster expanded its definition of \u201cfemale\u201d to include \u201chaving a gender identity that is the opposite of male\u201d \u2013 that change also drew criticism from conservatives, though a similar addition was made to the word \u201cmale.\u201d The year before, Merriam-Webster added a new definition to the pronoun \u201cthey\u201d to refer to a single person whose gender identity is nonbinary.<\/p>\n
