Africa-Press – Seychelles. <\/strong><\/span>Every January the Judiciary of Seychelles rings in the New Year with the annual reopening of the Supreme Court ceremony, hailed as one of the most important events of the year for the courts.<\/b><\/p>\n

Traditionally held on January 10, this ceremonious occasion includes a church service, a ceremonial parade through town with a motorcade to the Palais de Justice, observing of the Guard of Honour by the Chief Justice, and concludes with the Chief Justice delivering his speech in court, which sets the tone for the judicial year.<\/p>\n

A new theme is also chosen each year to give the public some insight as to the mindset and goals projected by the Judicial officers and judicial staff. It also serves to guide them in their work ethic, goals, and in the institution\u2019s general achievements to work towards.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s theme, \u2018Justice First\u2019 was selected by an internal committee of senior management staff and approved by Chief Justice Rony Govinden. The theme highlights that despite the recent changes in Seychelles\u2019 criminal landscape, with an increase in the number of high profile persons being charged before the Courts, justice is still and always will be placed first. Regardless of one\u2019s background, political affiliation, monetary powers or perceived influence in society, in the courtroom it is justice that comes first above all else.The Judiciary wishes to bring this founding principle back in the spotlight, as a reminder to the public and to all court stakeholders.<\/p>\n

In addition, a separate church collect is also done at the reopening to donate to a cause of the Judiciary\u2019s choice. This year, the Cancer Concern Association has been selected to receive donations from the reopening service, as a number of the Judiciary\u2019s internal team have been affected \u2013 one way or another \u2013 by this terrible disease.<\/p>\n

The Reopening of the Supreme Court is well attended by dignitaries, ambassadors, lawyers, and other notable guests in the country. Most recently, the guest list also features the President of the Republic \u2013 a new tradition instilled by Chief Justice Rony Govinden. He has also implemented the playing of the national anthem in the court before delivering his speech \u2013 a new addition welcome by many.<\/p>\n

Members of the public should note that the Courts and all its services will remain closed on Tuesday 10 January 10, 2023 due to the Reopening of Supreme Court ceremony. Normal operating hours will resume on Wednesday January 11, 2023.<\/p>\n
