Africa-Press – Seychelles. <\/strong><\/span>As celebrants flocked to La Digue for the annual Feast of the Assumption yesterday, over on Mahe\u0301 Margaret Woodfield Pouponneau and her family were marking another celebration: her 111th birthday.<\/b><\/p>\n

The St Louis resident is considered the oldest citizen of Seychelles, gaining the title of ‘La Doyenne’ of Seychelles following the passing of Nancy Marie in 2021 at the age of 112.<\/p>\n

Mrs Pouponneau kicked off her birthday with an early morning visit and wishes from her longtime neighbour, President Wavel Ramkalawan.<\/p>\n

Her day continued with a special mass at her home at Serret Road presided by Anglican priest, Father Bryan Volce\u0300re, and animated by members of the St Paul’s Mothers’ Union.<\/p>\n

Those present were reminded of Mrs Pouponneau’s active role within the Mothers’ Union, a community she cherished and contributed to over the years.<\/p>\n

The mass was followed by a warm reception during which various gifts were bestowed on behalf of the Office of the President and the Ministry of Local Government & Community Affairs.<\/p>\n

The gathering saw the presence of Hon. Sathya Naidu, MNA for St Louis, principal secretary for Local Government & Community Affairs Kevin Perine, and the district administrator for St Louis, Hannah Quatre.<\/p>\n

Mrs Pouponneau, ne\u0301e Gill, was born in Anse Royale on August 15, 1912, into a family of seven.<\/p>\n

Mother to three daughters and a son, some of whom have passed away, Mrs Pouponneau lost her husband, Wilby, in 1982.<\/p>\n

With an unwavering joy for life \u2013 she is still able to speak and hum her favourite hymns \u2013 Mrs Pouponneau’s story serves as a timeless reminder of the power of community, resilience, and the profound impact of a life well-lived.<\/p>\n
