Africa-Press – Seychelles. <\/strong><\/span>The Ministry of Health has in recent months observed a marked increase in the number of TB (tuberculosis) cases.<\/p>\n

Since the beginning of 2023 to date, a total of 18 cases (17 males \/ 1 female) have been diagnosed.<\/p>\n

Nine of the cases are persons who use drugs (PWUDs).<\/p>\n

In September alone, 6 new cases were reported, 5 of whom are using illicit drugs.<\/p>\n

Two (2) TB deaths have been registered in 2023.<\/p>\n

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis.<\/p>\n

It primarily affects the lungs but can also affect other parts of the body. TB is transmitted through the air when an infected individual talks, coughs or sneezes, making it particularly concerning in settings where individuals are in close proximity to each other, especially for extended periods.<\/p>\n

Certain conditions increase your risk of contracting TB:<\/p>\n

The clinical features of TB can vary depending on the stage of infection. Symptoms include: persistent wet cough that lasts for more than three weeks; chest pain or discomfort; fatigue and weakness; weight loss and decreased appetite; night sweats; fever and chills especially in the evening; and shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.<\/p>\n

If you have any persisting cough and any of the symptoms mentioned above OR you have been a close contact of a person who is confirmed to have TB, please visit your health centre for assistance.<\/p>\n
