Africa-Press – Seychelles. <\/strong><\/span>On Monday, October 30, 2023, the chairperson of the Defence and Security Committee, Hon. Clifford Andre, met with the charge\u0301 d\u2019affaires for the United States to the Seychelles, Adham Loutfi.<\/p>\n

The purpose of the meeting was for the newly accredited charge\u0301 d\u2019affaires to discuss the mandate, goals, and challenges of the DSC, as well as ways in which the United States could be of assistance.<\/p>\n

Hon. Andre pointed out that the biggest challenges faced by the committee were budgetary constraints, and a lack of capacity-building measures for both members and support staff of the DSC.<\/p>\n

He noted that all capacity-building themes were important to the DSC, ranging from illicit drugs, cyber-crime, maritime security, among others, and that the US embassy should not hesitate to share these training opportunities with the committee.<\/p>\n

Both virtual and in-person training opportunities were discussed, with the chairperson pointing out that any exposure to technical knowledge-building sessions would be of great importance.<\/p>\n

For his part, Mr Loutfi remarked that Seychelles was an important actor in the Indian Ocean region and held noteworthy significance to the United States as the two countries share many mutual interests such as maritime security, economic growth, and the strong development of the education sector.<\/p>\n

Following the meeting, it was proposed that a future one with the rest of the DSC would enhance these discussions further.<\/p>\n

The DSC holds an oversight and development role for security-based entities, such as intelligence, police, and other defense forces.<\/p>\n
