Africa-Press – Seychelles. <\/strong><\/span>The Seychelles Prison Service has received restraint jackets and protective headgear to better manage inmates who may try to harm themselves. In a press release issued last Friday, the Seychelles Prison Service (SPS) said mental health care management and restorative justice is one of the key areas it is including in its 2024 to 2029 strategic plan. More recently, the prison service engaged with the Mental Health Tribunal and had a follow up meeting on November 10, with Dr Daniella Malulu, consultant in charge and Annalisa Labiche, senior clinical psychologist.<\/p>\n

The meeting addressed plan for a forensic unit where only inmates who are assessed by mental health professionals and as an immediate care response to a self-harm attempt, would be managed. Furthermore, there would be closer collaboration with forensic psychiatrist as from February 2024.<\/p>\n

Awareness training sessions with prison staff will be organised and supported by mental health professionals. The mental health of inmates was reiterated at the recent budget presentation before the National Assembly where the Commissioner of Prison, Raymond St Ange, highlighted its negative impact on the inmates\u2019 family, staff, and other inmates. \u201cThe concrete steps being taken now and the commitment to address matter as a strategic objective, is a confirmation of what is being done and what is being planned,\u201d read the statement.<\/p>\n

Possible opioid disorders will also be addressed at a final prison safety champions meeting to be held later this year, as the new equipment is tested and operating procedures are implemented. The prison service has also received protective cut resistance gloves that will be issued to staff serving with the custodial department, the prison security unit (PSU), and the prison escort unit (PEU), as added safety measures when responding to inmates who may have sharp items in their possession. The equipment will be placed at the SPS Montagne Pose\u0301e prison and SPS Bois de Rose remand facility. Contributed<\/p>\n
