Africa-Press – Seychelles. <\/strong><\/span>After two extensions of deadline, until yesterday, 21 out of the 28 registered local sporting associations and federations had submitted their nominees for the Sports Awards of the Year 2023 ceremony scheduled for Friday March 1.<\/p>\n

The initial deadline for submission of nominees was January 10, but following failure to abide by most sports governing bodies, the selection committee decided to extend the deadline to Friday January 19. Until late yesterday, some sports federations and associations were still sending in names of their nominees.<\/p>\n

For the 2023 awards, sports federations and associations had the opportunity to nominate five athletes in order of preference \u2013 one to five \u2013 in the senior male and female categories. In the young male and female categories, sports federations and associations were allowed to nominate three athletes \u2013 one to three.<\/p>\n

It is on January 31 that the nominees will be shortlisted to 10 finalists in the senior male and female categories, while in the young athletes categories, there will be five finalists in both the male and female classes.<\/p>\n

The last time the Sports Awards of the Year crowning ceremony was held was in 2020 to reward the best athletes for the sporting year 2019. Swimmer Felicity Passon and sailor Rodney Govinden are still holding on to the sportsman and sportswoman titles after winning them at the last ceremony held in 2020.<\/p>\n

However, last year, the National Sports Council (NSC) organised a recognition ceremony as a sign of appreciation for the athletes\u2019 dedication and commitment during the post-Covid era following the resumption of sports.<\/p>\n

A total of 46 athletes from 25 sports disciplines who bounced back in 2021 and came out stronger to perform above expectations in 2022, showing resilience, thus achieving outstanding results, both nationally and at international level received special recognition awards during a special ceremony held at the Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay hotel.<\/p>\n
