Africa-Press – Seychelles. <\/strong><\/span>The Seychelles Prison Services is on the verge of a significant milestone, as the first phase of its new remand facility is set to be finished by the end of the first quarter.<\/p>\n

Construction of the state-of-the-art facility at Perse\u0301ve\u0301rance 1 began in April 2023, aiming to provide a solution for remandees, who are subject to fewer restrictions than convicted prisoners.<\/p>\n

Originally slated for completion by October 2023, the first phase faced unexpected delays due to adverse weather conditions and global shipping disruptions.<\/p>\n

The initial phase consists of 20 cells designated for juvenile and adult female remandees.<\/p>\n

Despite setbacks, progress remains steady, superintendent of Seychelles Prison Services (SPS) Raymond St Ange expressed to Seychelles NATION, following a site visit on Monday.<\/p>\n

“I am satisfied with the outcome so far. The work is progressing very well,\u201d Mr St Ange stated.<\/p>\n

The facility promises top-tier security features, including advanced CCTV technology, to ensure the safety and well-being of both staff and inmates.<\/p>\n

Once operational, it will significantly support the SPS\u2019 operations, including the new youth offenders\u2019 facility on Praslin.<\/p>\n

Head of remand services, chief inspector Jocelyn Coopoosamy and her team will relocate to the new facility.<\/p>\n

The completion of the facility’s first phase will eliminate the need to transfer female remandees to Montagne Pose\u0301e. This move will allow the SPS to refurbish existing facilities, thereby improving conditions for female convicts.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, male remandees will remain at Bois de Rose for the time being.<\/p>\n

Mr St Ange emphasised the anticipation surrounding the facility’s activation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe look forward to having a brand new facility to operate it to the highest standard possible,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Despite challenges in human resources, the SPS is diligently managing staffing to ensure adequate support for both the youth facility and the new remand centre. Flexibility remains key as efforts continue to optimise operations within the prison service.<\/p>\n
