Africa-Press – Seychelles. <\/strong><\/span>Seypec steps up campaign for safety culture at petrol stations<\/b><\/p>\n

To commemorate the World Day for Safety and Health at Work which was yesterday, the Seychelles Petroleum Company intensified its educational campaign to promote a safety culture at petrol stations during vehicle fuelling.<\/p>\n

This came after the company noticed a significant increase in the number of incidents involving clients driving off with the nozzle still in their tanks after fuelling.<\/p>\n

According to general manager of operations and technical at the Seychelles Petroleum Company (Seypec) Ray Hoareau,since January they have recorded six related incidents and this, he said, is very alarming, not necessarily in terms of repair costs, but rather in the safety aspects since flammable substances are involved in the daily operations of the stations.<\/p>\n

Mr Hoareau explained that Seypec is continuously raising awareness of local fuel stations\u2019 users of the safety and security indicators and the correct methods and conduct to be followed at service stations, especially during the process of filling vehicles.<\/p>\n

This, he said, is for their own safety, as well as that of others, including the staff at the stations.<\/p>\n

Mr Hoareau also added that Seypec has over the years promoted safety and proper procedures to be applied at the stations through sign boards displaying good practices, including no smoking and no usage of mobile phones.<\/p>\n

In terms of damages and repair costs, Mr Hoareau explained that it costs Seypec around R250,000 to replace a fuel pump, while the cost is fully absorbed by the service providers who in return transfers it to the customers.<\/p>\n

This, he said, is something that should be avoided at all cost, especially with the actual economic climate.<\/p>\n

The World Day for Safety and Health at Work is an annual international campaign to promote safe, healthy and decent work. It is held on April 28 and has been observed by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) since 2003.<\/p>\n

It also promotes the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally, while the theme for the World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2022 focused on enhancing social dialogue towards a culture of safety and health.<\/p>\n
