\u201cSeychelles today joins the rest of the world to celebrate the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. This year\u2019s theme is \u2018Rising from drought together\u2019. This slogan reminds us that desertification and drought are two of the many challenges that the world faces.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn recent years, we have experienced water shortages in Seychelles. Changes in the rainfall pattern have resulted in extended dry periods, therefore placing massive pressures on water resources management. Given that we depend on fresh water flowing through streams and<\/p>\n

reservoirs including dams, PUC has to impose restrictions to ensure better management of water. As is the case with other small islands developing states, we remain vulnerable and threatened by the impacts of climate change. Extreme events, notably flooding and longer periods of drought are expected to increase in the years to come. Eventually, fresh water supply and water retention at catchment areas will be a major challenge for us.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is for this reason that government has developed a water policy to effectively manage this prestigious resource. A water legislation is also being drafted to ensure the protection and efficient management of water catchment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe acknowledge the financial and technical support of donors for the implementation of water related projects such as the Ecosystem Based Adaptation (EBA), which is aimed at reducing our country\u2019s vulnerability to climate change, targeting water scarcity as one of the focused areas.<\/p>\n

Such projects have benefitted the farming communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet us also take time to reflect on the theme \u2018Rising from Drought Together\u2019 and find ways to rise from the adverse impacts experienced as a result of drought. Let us join forces with the global community to reverse the impacts of drought on the environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe time is now for communities to come together and find ways to reduce our vulnerabilities by coming up with adaptation strategies to enhance our resilience therefore sustaining our water resources.\u201d<\/p>\n
