They are Rahul Rajesh (Independent School), Turissa Sullivan (Independent School) and Sylvius Laporte (Seychelles Institute of Arts and Design).

The schools from which the outstanding students hail from are Independent School, Seychelles Institute of Art and Design (Siad), Seychelles Institute of Distance and Open Learning (Sidol), Ile Perseverance secondary, School of Advanced Level Studies (Sals), Pointe Larue secondary, Vijay International School (Praslin) and English River secondary.

The learners were selected by the Cambridge Assessment International Education based on their performance in each of the subjects they sat for specifically in the October and November examination in 2021.

The students received their awards and certificates during a ceremony yesterday in the auditorium of the Seychelles Institute for Teacher Education at Mont Fleuri.

Head of education services, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Indian Ocean, Waleed Bagadi, the guest of honour at the ceremony, said that the programmes studied will give the students vital skills that will help them for their future.

“Our programmes are designed to give you confidence and help you develop the ability to be reflective and innovative, socially engaged and ready to make a difference. This is the Cambridge International philosophy that you have come to embody. These are the attributes that will stay with you as you embark on your further studies and career. We hope that your studies have started to help you identify the career path you might decide to take.”

He added that, “During this Covid-19 pandemic, you have all had to improvise and adapt to a blended learning approach with whatever resources were available to you. Your efforts and achievements in this regard are commendable and a testament to the nation’s resilience.”

He was accompanied by Jennie Wellbelove, international education contract manager.

The ceremony was attended by principal secretary for Education Services, Merna Eulentin; senior officials from the Ministry of Education; representatives of public and private schools and parents.

In her speech, Ms Eulentin said that they are encouraging schools to work harder in raising the attainment and profiles of their students in the Cambridge examination.

“We have always understood and acknowledged that our future is inextricably linked to the education of our children. This is why I believe it is time to lead a new era of mutual responsibility in education; one where we all play our roles, and feel accountable, towards facilitating the achievements of our children: parents, teachers, the Ministry of Education and everyone else across the country. We need to intensify our focus on setting higher standards and inspirational examples for the children in our schools to follow as the way forward, towards seeing much more of them scooping awards here today.”

On behalf of the students, Anorah Renaud (Sals) read her vote of thanks, thanking the teachers for the deep impact they’ve had on their studies, also thanking their
