Ponta do Sol, on the island of Santo Antão, will host, on the 27th of September, the first regional adapted sports championship, designed to develop the skills of people with functional limitations. Registration is open until the 25th and the organization encourages anyone with a disability to join .
According to the Regional Adapted Sports Association on the island, the objective is to encourage learning and the development of skills for people with functional limitations, allowing greater autonomy, through the development of physical condition and cognitive development.
Another purpose of the championship, organized by the aforementioned association, in partnership with the Ribeira Grande City Council, is to promote sports in an inclusive, motivating way and with a spirit of healthy competition, as well as exchanges between athletes and coaches .
The Santo Antão regional adapted sports championship will also be an opportunity to make “a pre-selection of athletes with potential, in the medium and long term, to represent Santo Antão in national and international competitions”, explained the association leader.
Modalities
The championship, which already has 60 entrants, will cover disciplines such as athletics (100, 200 and 400 meter events), for athletes from various categories (physical and intellectual disabilities and Down Syndrome).
There will also be shot put and dice throwing events, also in different categories, and a sitting volleyball game, the latter which will be the only collective event in the championship, according to information provided to A Nação by the president of the association, Andy Delgado.

Registration is open until the 25th of this month and the association encourages registration from anyone with a disability, based on the principle that “sport can change lives and form champions for life”.

Isto porque o evento vai ter lugar no Estádio Municipal João Serra, em Ponta do Sol, a partir das 8h, da próxima quarta-feira, 27.
