Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Sierra Leone national team head coach, Mohamed Kallon has unveiled a 26-man home-based squad as preparations gear up for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The announcement is a crucial step in Sierra Leone’s campaign to secure a spot in the global football tournament which will be hosted by the US, Mexico and Canada next year.
The squad, composed entirely of players from the Sierra Leone Premier League, is set to begin preliminary training sessions aimed at building cohesion and sharpening tactics ahead of the qualifiers. Kallon, a national legend and former international star stressed the importance of allowing local talent to compete for places in the final team.
The list of players include Musa Noah Kamara, Samuel Bekoe -both playing for the current league leaders, East End Lions and prolific Old Edwardians midfielder, Mohamed Fogbawa.
“This is the first phase of our preparation,” Kallon said. “We want to assess the fitness levels, technical abilities, and tactical understanding of our home-based players before integrating the foreign-based professionals.”
The training camp will run over the coming weeks, with regular sessions scheduled at the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) Academy in Freetown. The Leone Stars are aiming to improve on their previous World Cup qualifying campaigns, with hopes high among fans and stakeholders following Kallon’s appointment as head coach earlier this year.
Sierraloaded understands that the Sierra Leone FA will publish the full list of selected players shortly with further announcements regarding international friendlies and final squad selections to follow.
Sierra Leone’s road to the 2026 World Cup officially kicks off later this year in September when they take on Guinea-Bissau before hosting Ethiopia a week later.
The Leone Stars are drawn into a competitive qualification group comprising group leaders, Egypt and second place Burkina Faso. Sierra Leone would have to at least finish second to qualify for the play-offs. They are currently in third place with 8 points.
