Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), in collaboration with the Commonwealth of Learning (CoL), recently concluded a two-day workshop focused on Learners’ Support Processes and Guidelines for Open and Distance Learning (ODL). The workshop took place at the Milton Margai Congo Cross Campus.

The event aimed to strengthen support systems and guidelines for ODL programs in Sierra Leone.

Professor Adolphus Johnson, Chairman of the event, commended the TEC for organizing the workshop, highlighting its importance in advancing and modernizing the higher education sector to be more demand-driven. He emphasized that addressing key issues in higher education could have a cascading effect, positively impacting even the informal sector.

Professor Aliyagen Mohamed Alghali, Chairman of the TEC, expressed his enthusiasm at seeing dedicated educators, administrators, and support staff committed to enhancing the learning experience for ODL students. He noted that ODL has transformed education, making it more accessible and equitable, particularly for individuals in deprived, hard-to-reach areas, marginalized students, and those across the globe.

“With this accessibility comes the responsibility to ensure that our learners receive the support they need to succeed,” Professor Alghali stated. “This workshop will explore effective learner support processes and provide guidelines that can help institutions create a more inclusive and supportive environment for their students.”

Representing the Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Dr. Josephus Brima praised the TEC and its stakeholders for promoting ODL. He noted that education is increasingly moving towards ODL, and highlighted the setbacks experienced by the education system during the Ebola and COVID-19 outbreaks. He affirmed the Ministry’s full support for the ODL project.
