Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Sierra Leone’s President, Dr. Julius Maada Bio, during the Third Africa High-Level Forum on South-South and Triangular Summit, urged for significant changes in global governance and economic systems, tagging them as outdated and unfair to developing nations.
The forum, which was held from May 7th to 9th, 2025 in Freetown, brought together policymakers, ministers, experts, youth leaders, and NGO representatives from across Africa and the Global South, and was organized by the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) in collaboration with partners including the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), USAID, the Saudi Development Fund, and GIZ.
Speaking at the opening session, themed “The Role of the Global South in Reshaping the New International Order,” President Bio stated that the current global financial and trade structure marginalizes African voices.
“Africa is not only invited to sit at the table; we are building the table and creating opportunities for ourselves,” President Bio declared.
He argued that current global challenges expose the flaws of a world order created without meaningful input from the Global South. “The current situation is unsustainable. It does not need minor tweaks, it demands deep, transformative change. That is why this platform is essential. It offers not only a voice, but a clear pathway to lasting solutions,” he asserted.
President Bio highlighted Sierra Leone’s national reforms and development programs, including the Feed Salone initiative, the Youth Employment Scheme, and advancements in human capital development and infrastructure, as examples of strategic, homegrown solutions. He said those initiatives align with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Prime Minister of Algeria, who also spoke at the summit, echoed President Bio’s sentiments. He praised Sierra Leone’s leadership and commitment to peace, security, and sustainable development. According to the Prime Minister, South-South and Triangular Cooperation are vital for Africa’s progress.
“The South-South platform is essential for fostering regional reintegration, economic cooperation, peace, and national stability,” the Algerian Prime Minister stated, affirming that “It is time we scale up our collective efforts and strengthen our solidarity.”
The summit concluded with a renewed commitment from member states to collaborate on reshaping the global order, prioritizing equity, inclusion, and sustainable development.
