Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Director General of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), Musayeroh Barrie, represented Sierra Leone at the 2025 Africa-Indian Ocean (AFI) Aviation Week, where she highlighted the nation’s progress and outlined future plans for the aviation sector.
One major moment during the event was the signing of the Civil Aviation Master Plan with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). This step marks a growing partnership between Sierra Leone and ICAO, aiming to improve safety, systems, and overall air travel development in the country.
During the event, Barrie also met with the Ministry of Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia. They spoke about the idea of starting direct flights between Sierra Leone and Malaysia in the future. The goal is to open up more travel and business opportunities between the two countries.
She also took part in a group discussion about women’s roles in aviation, where she talked about Sierra Leone’s efforts to support more women in leadership positions. She pointed to the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Act, which ensures that 30% of leadership roles are held by women.
She thanked President Julius Maada Bio for backing the law and for his support in making sure women have a seat at the table. Barrie said her own role as Director General is one example of how the country is turning the law into real change.
Her message about women in aviation was well received by guests from many other countries, and she helped show how Sierra Leone is taking real steps toward making aviation better, safer, and more inclusive.
