Tamba Lamina Reveals Government's Stance on New Cities

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs, Tamba Lamina, has disclosed the Government’s position on the proposed creation of new cities and districts across the country in an interview on Radio Democracy.

According to Lamina, his ministry, together with the Ministry of Finance and the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) as determined by the Local Government Act 2022, advised President Julius Maada Bio on the creation of new cities and districts.

Lamina stated that they have reviewed the process and are examining and researching in various ways and decided to advise the President and Cabinet given their position.

The division will see the emergence of two new districts which are Panguma and Bandajuma, and also divide Freetown into two and Western Rural (Waterloo) into three. This decision means that the Western Urban, Freetown will have two councils, and the Western Rural will have three councils.

He stated that the division of boundaries does not only determine by population, but other factors which he said they have already highlighted to Sierra Leoneans.

He urged locals to support the new decision and that they should desist from discouraging or misleading others.

The Minister said that he believed they have followed the law to the latter as provided in the 1960 Act which clearly states the powers of the President.
