Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs, Tamba Lamina, has announced major administrative reforms following Government Cabinet’s recent proposal to restructure Sierra Leone’s local governance system.
Speaking at a press briefing, Minister Lamina revealed that Lungi, located in the Port Loko District, will officially be declared a new city. This decision, he stated, is due to Lungi’s strategic geographical position and its proximity to the Freetown International Airport, Sierra Leone’s main gateway to the world.
“This development recognizes Lungi’s growing urban significance and paves the way for improved infrastructure, governance, and service delivery,” concern citizen said.
In a move to decentralize governance and improve administrative efficiency, Cabinet also approved the creation of two new districts: Bandajuma, affecting parts of the Bo and Pujehun Districts, and Kpanguma, which will incorporate areas from the Kenema and Kailahun Districts. These changes are aimed at bringing government services closer to the people and ensuring better representation.
Additionally, Minister Lamina disclosed that the Western Area Urban (Freetown) will be split into two districts, while the Western Area Rural will be subdivided into three. These changes are expected to enhance planning, coordination, and resource allocation in the densely populated capital and its surrounding areas.
Further details, including timelines and implementation strategies, are expected in the coming weeks.
