Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr. Timothy Kabba, has announced that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will hold a crucial mediation and security meeting this week, focusing primarily on addressing the ongoing Yenga dispute between Sierra Leone and Guinea.
Minister Kabba confirmed that a constructive meeting occurred last weekend in Yenga village, attended by military and state officials from both nations. The gathering included police, military personnel, and co-chiefs, marking a significant step towards promoting peace and stability in the region.
The Minister also asserted that the aggression against Sierra Leone constitutes a violation of international law. He stated, “Resolving the longstanding issue between Sierra Leone and Guinea over Yenga, which has persisted for two decades, requires careful attention. The government is actively engaging with the Guinean authorities to seek a resolution.”
Kabba elaborated on the ongoing diplomatic efforts, noting that current initiatives are centered on a bilateral approach. The issue has also been presented to various organizations, including ECOWAS and the African Union, to which both countries belong.
“All options will be considered,” he said, highlighting the possibility of involving the International Court of Justice as a final mediation solution if other efforts do not succeed. “Diplomacy is the ultimate recourse for resolving border disputes between two sovereign nations,” he emphasized.
