Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay Esq., convened a consultative session with stakeholders to discuss Sierra Leone’s preferred electoral reform, focusing on Recommendation 78 of the tripartite committee’s report. The event took place at the New Brookfield Hotel.

In his opening remarks, the Attorney General emphasized President Julius Maada Bio’s unwavering commitment to the tripartite recommendations, noting that this dedication was evident even before the formal reform process began. He described the session as a crucial opportunity for inclusive and transparent dialogue on the nation’s electoral future.

Acknowledging the global challenges facing electoral systems, Sesay pointed out that no single model is flawless. He encouraged participants to engage openly in discussions regarding the two primary systems under consideration: Proportional Representation (PR) and First-Past-the-Post (FPTP).

He also reminded attendees that since the return to multiparty democracy in 1996, the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) has independently managed the electoral process, urging stakeholders to reflect on this during their discussions.

In closing, the Attorney General called for a collaborative and forward-thinking approach aimed at selecting an electoral system that truly represents the will of the people, strengthens democratic institutions, and endures over time.
